I have a 1990 LX w/ a 5.0 5 speed and the tranny is starting to whine real bad and I can hear grinding. Well I checked at work and we have a brand new 5 speed for a 99 V6 mustang and I can pick it up for $450. Does anyone know if they are the same and whether or not I can use it. Thanks

IIRC you'd have to change the pilot shaft to make that one work.

What is the pilot shaft? Is that easy to change out and can I swap that out from my current tranny? Thanks

since the above posters are being weisnheimers (dont worry i can be the same way) its the shaft coming out the front of the trans. 94-95 v8 and i guess up till the current v6 have a 5/8" longer shaft and bellhousing for body clearence. the trans case is the same, so once the shafts are compatible it will bolt right up.

why not just get your current trans rebuilt?

OK thanks guys. As far as this being "beyond my capabilities" if I want to do something I can learn, that is not a problem. You know everyone has to learn sometime if it is something that interests you. But, I dont have the time right now to make this a learning experience and figuring doing the input shaft swap or a rebuild, either way the tranny has to be tore apart I might as well rebuild it. I just figured a brand new tranny for $450 was cheap and if it was just a quick fix I would throw it in. Anyhow, thanks guys.

Those V-6 trannies are actually mazda crap. Don't bother with it. Rebuild your existing t-5.

They are not the Mazda M5R trans, the V6 Mustangs use the same T-5 transmission that you have in your car.

The 97+ are rated at 300-ft-lbs.

There are differences however, most notably the addition of a synchronized reverse, electronic speedometer and in 2005, the addition of a hydraulic clutch and remote-link shifter mount.

There are enoiugh differences however that it would not be a direct swap into a Fox, but there are some parts that are interchangable.

To the original poster, the '99 V6 trans is more trouble than it's worth. Get a Fox t5
