tranny mount ? ( whats this extra piece?)

when i put the t5z in place of the aod, i forgot to put this piece pictured back in.......it went under the exisitng trans mount and bolted to the tranny.........almost like a t-mount cage........but it doesnt bolt to the cross member so i'm not quite sure of it's purpose unless its to keep the existing mount from getting bent to far outa shape...

i suppose i need to put this back in?? whats it's purpose? is it something i would use with an after market tranny mount or just the stocker??

When I replaced my mounts, I had a piece kinda like that (I cant remember exactly what it looked like, or if it was that exact peice). It ran through the old mount and my new mount didnt have it, so I had to force it into my new mount (parts store mounts). I didnt use poly on the fox, so I cant answer if it is needed. And I cant remember why it was there (it seemed important or I would not have transferred it).

well it looks to me as if it's there to maybe keep the stocker from twisting way to far under really hard acceleration.......but i'm not sure....i'll just drive it easy till i get a chance to crawl back under and put it back in.....i've just never seen such a piece, usually trans mounts and motor mounts are just one piece...

Was it between the tranny and the crossmember there? I remember last spring when I took replaced my clutch that there was the crossmember, a hanger to hook exhaust to and another piece that went there to bolt onto the frame.

if i remember correctly, the tranny mount goes against the tranny, then this piece ( picture) went under the trans mount, then you put the bolts through bolting them both to the tranny.......then you'd put the exaust hanger between the crossmember and tranny mount

in other words you put the mount to the trans, put this piece over or around the mount then bolt in place...it basically goes around the mount it doesnt bolt to the cross member in anyway which is why the only thing i can think of is it's like a cage kinda for the rubber mount itself...

I thought it served two purposes. One it acts like a bump stop to the poly mount above it and two, it keeps the poly mount from becoming deformed. I could be completely wrong but I thought that's what it did. Whatever you do, don't toss it out.

I am going with tunedin's guess as well. I was going to say that it probably had something to do with helping the rubber mount to keep it's shape because it would cave in under the pressure of the transmission.

no i'll just throw it back in, i'd just noticed it and didn't know if it was an aod thing or if they all had something like this........

It's part of the mount. I think i have one laying around. Let me see if i can find it and snap a picture

yeah i slipped it back in, it goes in or through the mount, i just pulled the mount out slipped it back in and bolted it back up.............i assume you re use it if you buy a new stock mount unless they come with......

you guys call yourselves mustang enhusiasts??? have you not been under one yet? let me clarify it for you all that dont know ,,, that piece slides inside the opening in the traans mount not over it, then you put the trans mount up to the exhaust hanger, slide the bolts through and bolt it to the trans. les review trans meets hanger meets trans mount with your piece installed INSIIIIDE the mount mees crossmember

I am pretty sure that everyone here that tried to describe it already knew that. But you still haven't answered the original question: does the original poster need it? All you described is where is goes, not what it does.

Searched and searched and searched, this was the only discussion I could find.
I just replaced my tranny mount with a new rubber unit thats thicker and made better than the factory unit. That little cross brace bar does not fit into the new mount. I left it out , but want to hear more opinions on people who have done this. The car is still up on jackstands getting more work done so I have not tested it out yet.

Is this piece only used with the factory tranny mount? or are you supposed to trim the rubber on the new mount to make it fit with it?
