Transmission question

A Tremec T5 is probably just a newer T5. Tremec builds them now. Shoot an email to "Bangin" Bob Hanlon @ Hanlon Motorsports. He is a Tremec dealer and does Borg Warner and Tremec service and has for 25yrs. He rebuilt mine very reasonable and has all the parts in stock. Tore it down in about 15 min while I waited and SHOWED me what it needed. Works like a champ. Info@hanlonmotorsports.com is the email addy. How much could you get the Tremec ? A rebuild of your will probally be cheaper I'd recommened you have Hanlon motorsports rebuild the one you already have Bob is a great guy to do bussiness with .

Well you said the one you can buy is a Tremec , i'd find out if the Tremec is a Z-spec trans(T5Z) if so I would grab that .

the T5 in your 92 is the strongest factory T5 that was produced(90-newer) aside from the cobra. a "tremec t5" is just a t5..your 92 t5 is a" tremec t5"

under a bolt on the side of the gear box there is an aluminum tag...find out what the numbers on the tag say on the 2k mile t-5..chances are that its a pre 1990 or even from a 4cyl and is weaker than the T5 thats currently in your car...if so, it will be a downgrade from what you have now...

A Tremec 3550/TKO/TKO 500/TKO 600 is a completely different transmission from a T5. Strong and almost bulletproof unless you run them without proper lubricant or full throttle shift without the clutch.

A Tremec T5 is still the same T5 that is prone to self destruction when used in a street/strip or racing environment

T5 identifier information.
On the tail shaft of the transmission, there will be a stamped aluminum tag. The tag will have a number on it that you can cross reference to the chart below. There is no other way to find out what type of T5 it is without disassembling it. All the rest of the numbers on the outside of the T5 case are part numbers which are not unique to any particular T5 model.

Remember that 94 - 97 T5's have a longer input shaft and can only be used with a 94-95 bell housing unless you modify or replace the input shaft.

T5's used with a 4 cylinder have a 3.93 first gear, reduced torque ratings and an input shaft pilot diameter that is smaller that the T5 used for V6 & V8 engines. The Pilot diameter is .59" compared to the .668" used on V6 & V8 T5's. It requires a different pilot bearing to be used with a V6 or V8. The pilot bearing you need is for a Ford Ranger diesel from AutoZone part #14672

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

I work for www.bieberfever.com in Pheonix. We are an Elite Dealer for tremec trannys and one of their largest dealers. the stock T5 is rated to 330 t lbs of torque. A Tremec T5 is rated to 400HP and 350 Ft lbs of torque. The tremec T5 is a good stock replacement tranny NOT a Performance upgrade tranny. You want a performance upgrade tranny go with the Tremec TKO 500 or 600. Its going to deepend on what gears you are running and what HP and torque you are making when deciding to go with the 500 or 600.

a stock t5 is a tremec t5....Tremec bought out borg-warner and produced the T5 and its parts..
if by "tremec t5" you mean z-spec, then yes, they have a slightly higher tq rating than the stock production mustang t5
no stock t5 was ever rated at 330ft lbs..they were all rated at 300, and the 93 cobra spec was rated at 310
the T5Z(aftermarket) was rated at 330ft-lbs

you can get an all steel input bearing retainer and a billet cluster support plate to add a "little" extra strength...
