Turbocharger Bolts (T3)

In the process of restoring my engine, I have run into an annoying setback. To take the the turbo off the manifold to replace the gasket, which was found to be broken in half and cracked in 3 other places, I had to take the downpipe connector (technical term?)off the exhaust side of the turbo to get the turbo off the manifold. The nuts were frozen but rust remover and impact wrench got them off. Anyway, in the process of getting the "downpipe connector" off the exhaust side, 4 out of the 5 bolts that came out actually snapped on me. One survived, but just one isn't going to hold it together. Given that nobody carries manifold bolts for this car, what are my odds of finding these bolts, or does Garret use a standard size?

Incidentally, the manifold is cracked in two places, I couldn't see it before since the turbo was blocking that particular view.

if i'm reading this correctly your talking about the neck that has the o2 sensor on? First, try to never use an impact gun on the exhaust related components. Due to the fact that the temp on those peices changes so often, bolts get brittle. The bolts that bolt the wastegate elbow to the turbo are very common and can be found at any hardware store.

Incorrect. I used a breaker bar on the neck with the O2 sensor, the sound of a bolt snapping was identical to that of loosening it. I used an impact gun on the manifold itself. No, it wasn't cracked at the turbo outlet, it was down a ways and was rusted. Hardware store? Cool, a break. Thanks.

how are you planning/did you get the broken bolts out? most poeple have to drill them out.

Thats what I'm wondering  I broke one of these bolts aslo and payed a machine shop to get the broken pice out of the turbo. Then I took one of the bolts that servied down to a bolts ware house place and had them set me up with another one. Like RayIII said, its a grade 5 bolt and use Antiseize on exhaust stuff. I also bought new bolt hard ware from MotionDynamics for a fair price. Now keep in mind there stuff is Stainless and has to have Antiseize on it ! If want I got a few pics/pages on doing a mainifold swap that you may find helpfull on my site. Just click the link at sin my Sig.

Good Luck.

Caution on the stainless in the cast housing. The stainless likes to walk out of the housing. If you go that route keep an eye on them.
The grade 5 with antiseize is what I would go with. grade8 are a Bitch To drill out if they do break.
