Has anyone encountered anything negative like overheating due to the water pump being slowed down? Do they make a big difference or is it a waste of money? I am looking for low end torque and am also considering a rear end gear change.......any suggestions?

I have had no negative effects from the under-drive pullies.
Unless you are running a 1000 watt stereo at full volume while idling at a stop light at night, I doubt you would ever notice any difference.
And the difference would be in the alternator, not the water pump.

The mid range torque with the pullies has improved quite a bit. STRONG.

However, the 4.10's were by far the best bang for the bucks. :nice:

No probs here...its a very respectively cheap mod as well. I have the motoblue pulleys. Basically they do the very same thing, and I beleive the Motoblue are a lil bit cheaper than the ones with the name Steeda on them. But I guess it comes to preference.

Thanks for the info.about the pulleys. I'm glad to hear that they help torque. My GT needs it.........that's why I am considering a rear end gear change. Can anyone tell me if a 4.10 would be too radical for an automatic/ every day driver?......... I am leaning towards the 3.73.

The thing about 4.10 gears is this. When you have stock gears, like now, and you are at 70 mph...Your tach pobably says right around 2000 or 1900 rpm's, right? With 3.73s it will say 2200-2300rpm. With 4.70 expect better acceleration, but at 70 expect your rpm to be much higher, therefore crappier mpg and high end.
So, my choice was 3.73...because I wanted a slightly quicker acceleration...but I use my car everyday so I did not want worse mpg. Good luck on the choice...the higher gear you go...the worse your mpg and engine rpm will be at cruise speeds.

Ditto on that info...

I also have an automatic with 3.73s and love 'em...

Better acceleration and no big bad gas mileage drop...

Best all around gear selection for our trannys...

Stick is another matter. Most guys go with the 4.10s!!!

But the most important thing to remember is to "BUY FORD RACING GEARS" and not another brand. Too many stories about gear whine with other brands...

If you are going to change gears and spend all that money, go with a set of OEM gears only...

Best of Luck, Dave

I agree.

Go with Ford gears AND be sure to have a professional mechanic with lots of experience installing gears do the job.
Trust me, do not cut corners.... you DO NOT want gear whine.

I went with 4.10's on my manual trans.
Running about 200RPM's more than stock.
My MPG's have dropped a couple, but then again my foot is in it much more.:D

not worth the potential aggravation. I am representing a guy in a warranty claim against Ford. He installed BBK underdrive pulleys. Later, his oil pump failed. Ford denied the warranty claim because he had installed aftermarket parts. This is a prima facie violation of federal laws on warranties but Ford did it anyway. The funny thing is that the oil pump is driven by the crank and the pulley has as much to do with the oil pump as a trailer hitch does. Now this guy has had no car for months and Ford is dragging its feet. I would not bother, at least while the car is under warranty.

Final decision-3.73

Thanks everyone for the insightful advise. Regarding pulleys, the last posting about Ford voiding warranty was a real eye opener.......I think I'll wait on that mod. Also, I agree that Ford Gears and a professional install is the way to go. Looks like my new 'stang is gonna be an expensive toy, but damn, aint it fun!

I haven't seen much difference

Before I put the supercharger on, I didn't notice much difference with the pulleys. I never had any overheating or charging problems. All seemed to run fine.

Ford has really been a bunch of sock stuffers on this one. The dealer he took the car to refused to give him the address of the warranty specialist who denied the claim and the warranty specialist refuses to give my client his mailing address. I wanted the client to send a letter to the warranty guy asking that he state in writing the reasons for the denial but it is difficult to do when you don't know where to send the letter. We did some sleuthing and came up with an address. The client also talked to a customer service manager who could not find the address either (yeah, right) and would only tell the client that the warranty was being denied for the reasons stated in the warranty booklet. To this day, 5 months after the engine failure, Ford refuses to state in writing what they have told my client orally: that the warranty claim is being denied solely on the fact that an after market part has been installed. I really wish I could get them to be dumb enough to put this in writing. It would make a summary judgment that much easier.

Nice how they do business. :bang: And everyone bitches about lawyers this and lawyers that. If companies would simply honor the contracts they wrote and not violate federal law on warranties, people would never have to go to lawyers in the first place.

I can use the Search function, hooray for me! Seriously, I have been told about several '03 and '04 Mach 1 engine failures attributed to the installation of aftermarket underdrive pullies. As most of us know, our bottom ends are basically the same as the Mach 1's.

Some have said the problem may be caused by a weird harmonic that causes the oil pump to fail. Has anyone had problems after installing aftermarket underdrive pullies on their '05 up GT?
