Unequal length shorty headers for a 408 ...

I am considering removing my long tubes and going with shorties to address the problem with my long tubes hanging too low for a street car in an area where there are lots of speed bumps.

What shorty headers are available for a 408 that won't be a restriction to the flow? I do not want equal length headers; they are too much of a pain to work around.

I heard that KOOKS also makes shorty headers ... anyone using them?

Yep, For Racing made them. Weren't they the originals on the 95 Cobra R?

I've never seen Kook's shorty headers. I'm sure they can make them for you but they might be pretty expensive. Too bad we can't get mid-length headers for our cars.

I've seen your threads where you have expressed your displeasure for the lack
of floor pan hugging application the Kooks LT's have left you with.

Seems to me the problem is not with LT's in general but the fit of those particular
LT's.

I'd have to wonder if other brands of LT's are gonna hang low like the Kooks?

Has your research shown ALL LT's for our Stangs with a Windsor are as such?

That really sucks...I had a set of ceramic coated 351W headers for a 94-95 mustang and I just sold em (Brand new) for like $200. I think that Ford Racing made them.
i wonder if they would flow well enough for a 410 ... probably, huh?

i guess you bought them. :nice:

according to a guy on hardcore50, accufab makes some midlengths for 351 windsors. he has some on his car now; he used to have kooks. his is a windsor with a vortech

what i have read, it seems that most of the long tubes for 351 conversion applications hang low. the fitment problem for long tubes is compounded by the fact that people use different k-members and mounts to lower the motor mounts and the long tube makers can't possibly deal with all those variables. to ensure well fitting long tubes on a 351 conversion street car with a custom k-member, i think the only option is to get them custom fitted. there is a shop nearby that does this, but they charge $3500 for them, and that is not even close to being worth it for me.

i am starting to think that mid lengths might be a good compromise. i can get the rest of the exhaust custom fitted locally

Here's what I have seen. The Bassani LT's hang ridiculously low, I've seen them on 3 different cars.

My Kooks LT's seem to line up perfectly. There is a reduction in ground clearance, but thats because the collectors and primaries are really big. This was on another car not mine.

Every set of Kook's headers I've seen are amazing, you can wrap your pinky finger around each primary.

Didn't Kooks ask you what k-member you were running before you ordered them?
zenboy, did you get my pm?

yes, they did ask about the k-member. i said i didn't know, did they recommend one, and they said yes, they recommend AJE. so i went with an AJE k-member.

i know i could probably send them back and go that route, but i really don't feel like doing that. i still couldn't be sure they'd be right when they came back. leezure had to send his back 3 times before it was right for him. i just don't want to go there. plus i'd need to get them recoated and all that.

i am pretty sure i'm just going to go with shorties or mid-lengths and be done with it.

Get 351 swap BBK lt's, cut off the collector ball, weld in a 3" collector ball and do the same to the x-pipe, My BBK's have GREAT ground clearence

Yeah, my BBK LT's rub the tranny cross-member, that's how tight they are.

An exhaust shop can cut and weld that pretty cheap, thats my next mod for my 302 since my 408 swap is put on hold.

I have Hooker's but they are only 1 5/8" way too small....but I still make power:D They are for 94-95 with a 351 and they fit perfect. This is one of the things I have to replace for more power.

I will try to find the place that has ad's in the mags and they are out of Calif I think. Anyway I called them and they asked what K-member I had which is a Griggs, and he said they had one there and they would make it for mine. They also have other K-members. He also said...that I could send it back to be modified if things were not right.

I was going to do that then have it ceramic coated locally. I would rather send it back a few times and have it fit right then something so low I can't drive the car.

Hooker also makes 2" longtubes for Foxes with 351's. I was wondering how they would fit? I wish I knew someone who has them.

i just found out that accufab makes mid-length headers. sounds like a great compromise.

for future reference, accufab bt-210 is the part number for 94/95 mid length 1 3/4" headers with 3" collectors.
