Hey Guys

I've been busy building the fox so I haven't paid that much attention to the engine, but if there is an opportunity, I'd like to take advantage.

My 89 has an 02 GT engine in it. 75k miles, w/ a Tremec 3650. I want to know what kind of cam profiles are working the best for you all.

I am and will always be N/A. It is carbureted, I have long tube headers. I want to upgrade the cams first, and will upgrade the heads later w/ either Patriot Perf pieces, or TFS heads. So consequently, the cams will have to work on the stock heads for now. I know I'll be limited by the stock springs, but I want a noticeable "musclecar" lope, low idle vacuum is not an issue as the car has been converted to manual brakes.

I'm guessing that the market for used performance cams for these motors is pretty "slim", so I don't hold out much hope of finding a set. But if anybody knows of a pair that will work let me know. I have green money.

You have a tough requirement list. Stock springs with a noticeable lope are going to be conflicting requirements and will eliminate the usage of most "stage 2" cam profiles for the mainstream cams out there. If I were you I would look at the MHS site and grab a set of stage 2 PI NA cams. They will work well with your stock heads and give you some lope.

If the springs are the issue, then I'll change them. I do not want to have P/V clearance issues however. That is truly the main concern.

Any particular reason you want to stay with stock springs, aside from a budget?

Other than the fact that I'll be throwing the money away when I replace the heads w/ an aftermarket pair that'll also have new springs. I'll do what has to be done as far as replacing the stock ones goes.

Is there any other thing(s) I'll have to consider/replace when installing the new cams?

Make sure they are degreed in. You cannot install a cam straight up without a lot of hope and/or beer in your fridge for when PTV happens.

Read up on ModularHeadShop, he has a lot of good information for do's and dont's for cam purchasing and cylinder head selection for the motor you want to build.

Yeah,....just got off MHS web site. I'll definitely use him and the bullet cam that he recommends for my combination. I'll be calling him as soon as time permits.

Thanks for the info, It's what I needed.

Mike something else to consider is watch his site for deals on used cams. Every once in a while I see a set of Comp Cams on there that are used, but in like-new condition, and IIRC he sells them for around $400.

I've always been told using used cams is like buying someone elses underwear, you just don't do it.

Generally I would want them inspected first. If one was to buy used cams from MHS, Nick ensures the cam journals and bearing faces are all in good shape. Take any 400,000+ mile 4.6 that had routine oil changes and I'm willing to bet the cam journals and bearing faces are in perfect shape.
