My '67 has the original 289 and 3 speed. It's running a 2 bbl carb and has dual exhaust. I bought the car less than two months ago with 72,000 original miles.

I was having an intermittent case of rocker noise. It wasn't even consistent when it did occur. Sometimes it was louder than other times. In all cases it sped up as the RPM's increased.

I fixed a cup of coffee and loaded my pipe with American Patriot tobacco and headed out to the car.

Once I had the valve covers and plugs out of the way I loosened all the lock nuts. I was attempting to start fresh.

My rockers are stud mounted and not rollers. As far as I know all is as it was from the factory.

I then followed the procedure as directed by Chilton. Manually got to TDC for #1, adjusted both valves.I did this by tightening the nut until the push rod could not rotate and then gave it another 1/4 turn. This was the procedure outlined in the manual.

And proceeded to follow the firing pattern, making 90 degree rotations prior to each cylinder adjustment.

Now?
It fires right up. There is no tapping, ticking, or hiccups. The engine sounds pretty smooth under the hood. However, the exhaust note is more akin to a mild performance cam and I get a small puff of smoke when I hit the happy pedal. Then the RPMs drop and it sometimes dies.

Did I make a mistake?
Do I need to reset the timing?
Should I have opted for beer or whiskey instead of coffee, even though it was only 8:00 A.M.?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I ended up redoing the adjustment. Now it's back to running the way it should, and has a light rocker tap.

I ended up having a beer too. And then mowing. And now it's whiskey and another pipe.
