289 heads were good when there was no aftermarket options for SBF's...like back when Billy Idol was in the top 40. They have smaller chambers, which means a higher compression ratio, but they're nothing to spend money on. Your E7's'll do you fine until you save up for something better.
On the Victor Jr. topic, it's also kind of a moot point if you're running stock pistons. Victor Jr.s have 2.05" intake valves, which will never clear the valve relief.

Ah, sorry...missed the signature. 12's are definitely achievable w/ the GT-40 irons, how close are you?
How are you doing for traction, does the car hook well? What do you have for suspension? Is it an auto or stick? If the car is an auto those 3.55's are probably too shallow for a decent quarter-mile car.

First and foremost the Vic Jr head will NOT clear a stock piston...consider that first.
Second the combo you have listed should have the potential to go 12's with ease, once you post up the answers to joncash I could steer you in the right direction. With suspension, exhaust and a little weight reduction I can get a stock GT in the 12's.

The Vics are too big for now... however, you could buy that combo for the 900.00 and then turn them around for the smaller and better head for your combo.. like they said, It is a good deal!!

Lowering springs help handling, they're definitely not ideal for a good launch at the strip. If you want to shine at the strip, you're going to have to consider giving up some of that nice cornering ability. A decent compromise is actually the stock (V-8) springs on the front and back. A step further is a set of front drag springs (Moroso seems to be the most popular), and a step further still is a set of Moroso's rear "Trick Springs". Front struts make a big difference for weight transfer, go with a set of Lakewood 70/30's or 90/10's if you really want to be hardcore. A more strreetable option is the KWB AGX adjustable front struts, they can be adjusted to be pretty soft but not as soft as the Lakewoods. The nice thing about those is they can be adjusted on the car so you can put them back to the firmer settings to drive home from the track.
You can also go to a lightweight front swaybar from Steeda or remove it all together to assist w/ weight transfer. Keep in mind that taking it off will make the car more unstable on the street, but you can always bolt it back on to get to work on Monday.
You can also get a set of "weekend tires" mounted on a set of lightweight drag rims. McCrearys are pretty popular for weekend strip rats, they're also lighter than radials--drag or otherwise. Add a set of skinnies for the front, and you might be surprised what kind of effect it'll have. You'll also be surprised at what it does to your braking ability, so keep those for Friday nights. You could also move the battery to the trunk....add a fiberglass hood....an electric fan...an aluminum driveshaft, also, how bad do you need that AC?

OK.. 12s on the motor!! you will need 3.73!! you will need B303 cam installed at 4* advanced !! You DONT need AFR's or T/F's .. you will need a set of PORTED E7s
Or GT40s !! all the rest you have now!!! pull the front sway bar.. and yes, a set of "weekend tires" is good!! all the rest is pure gravy!! but NOT needed!! you are there already.. get some driving skill.. some launch skills.. and you just saved a bunch of $$ on heads !! There are too many guys out there doing it on LESS!! Put the wallet away.. and practice!! cool !! Happy new Year!!

Yep.. IF you aren't banging the 12 second door with the GT40's... I still suggest putting the 900.00 in the suspension.. or induction!! Spending the money on the BIG Vic's is NOT the magic bullet for 12's !! There are a LOT of 13 sec aftermarket Alum. headed cars out there..
