i proudly bought a vortech V1 S-trim 5-6psi not long ago. im still putting things together such as 42#s injectors,255 fuel pump and 75mm maf. in regards to tuning, we all know it cost a bit more money. my question is if i can do a basic tune such as keeping the timing conservative and bumping up the fuel pressure but while all this, having a wideband for monitoring. im only going to hit 5-6psi. eventually i will get a tune once i have the money. the car is my daily driver as well. any input or advice will be acknowledge. btw, its a 94 5.0

thanks

get a tune or get a self tuner. just having a wideband isn't going to do you any good if you don't have a way to change what its saying. leave it as stock 10* timing. GET A TUNE. don't screw around with not tuning it. you will just have more headaches and you just spend a bunch of money on a car that will barely run and won't perform. it will just frustrate you. GET A TUNE. i can't stress that enough.

well eventually i am going to get a tune like i said but not right off the bat. a tune is money and im paying a respected local mustang shop to do my vortech install ( i go to school & work, so i wont have alot of time to do it ) they do have a dyno where they could do base tuning but not burning a chip. i live close to Blow By Racing where they could do a full tune and chip. will an FMU unit help me out? im being not being cheap but just times are tough now.

I agree with the "get a tune" suggestion...

However...it may not be neccessary at this point. With the parts you mentioned, some computer manipulation would be in order. But if you got the "kit" you can bolt it on and go. Just follow the manufactures instructions...prolly along the lines of using highest available octane, set base timing to 10, and use the FMU. The more you stray from a baseline configuration, the more you will require "tuning".

Having said that, you could put your supercharger on and run it (IAW the manufacturers instructions) and get a big smile, have it tuned, get a bigger smile, upgrade the accesories/tuned...get a perma-smile.

good luck!

your getting 42# injectors. FMU doesn't work. wait another month and save the money for the tune.

Why risk all the money you are putting into the car? I know times are hard....but how hard will times be if you blow this motor up?

Be safe. Whichever route that is (fmu or 42lb injectors). Dont try to cut corners on forced induction.

I agree with all those guys above about a tune

Let me put it bluntly

With that meter and those large inj's

I'd be supprised if you could drive it
and
If so ... its gonna be pig rich

i just got off the phone with Vortech and they said that it wasnt nessecary to get 42#s or a 255 pump. with a standard kit including the fmu, stock 19s,maf and fuel pump will be fine as long as i have the T-rex inline pump. but they recommended you can upgrade if your going to add more boost like 10psi +. this is coming from Vortech.

what do you have already? what is your end game?

if you have a bone stock 5.0 and bolt on a vortech package, and operate it within the manufactures parameters...you'll be fine. IE, 5-7 psi, a FMU can handle that, the package is made to do that. Start straying away from what it is designed to do...swap pulleys/upgrading injectors, (exceed the as delivered design limitations)..then you have to let the computer know what it is working with,or you'll have troubles ranging from poor drivability, to leaning out on the top end..... ie tune time.

lot of guys like to ditch the FMU, go right with the bigger injectors, fuel pump, tune...if that is your intention, then save the bucks, cause you'll need the electronic manipulation....if you got the nice Vortech box in the garage and can't wait to put it on, go for it...just don't get out of line with it.

what I've done...put the KB on, 8psi, with the FMU. Beat on it pretty good, no problems. (well, did pop a HG, but that was self induced, swapped a pulley w/ a friend, no other changes) Put a bigger fuel pump in, after the original quit one day. Had the intentions of going with heads cam etc. Picked up a tweecer and been messing with it, learnign to use it. In the meantime, got the heads, cam, lower intake, injectors, MAF..etc...just need some spare time between kids, dogs, work, school, deploying to put it all together...soon. This didn;t happen over night. Moral of the story, have a plan.....

again, good luck!

i pretty much have a stock motor other than a explorer intake w/ lower ported, 65mm TB, LTs,H-pipe & gears. its a daily driver. for now im looking at something simple around 7 psi to start and ill start building from there with bigger heads, cam and more boost.

You need some means of PULLING TIMING.... even if your a/f is dead on, if you run full timing you will pop a Headgasket or put a hole in a piston

Dont scrimp when it comes to forced induction. Its a great way to get good at changing headgaskets.

Get the best Maf you can afford and injectors that are sized correctly for the combo. With a good maf (accurate) your car should be safe and drivable as long as you dont go crazy with the timing. Keep your total timing low (10 degrees base/ 26 total is a good starting point). With this your car will be safe and drivable and reliable until you can get a good tune and make optimal power. And FMU is not the answer, nor is altering fuel pressure with an afpr. Your car will begin to learn around it over time and can still cause issues. Accuracy in the tune is the key and the maf is the most important think you will have on the car in that regard.

A wideband never hurts, but without means to tune with it its kinda pointless. Spend the money on some dyno time and a chip. unless you want to learn to tune yourself.
