Wake up the auto

Yeah, the price is a draw back. Not just for the converter but because you have to get it installed too. I say get one anyways, they are one hell of a mod for the automatic. Before I got mine in, I could take off from a dead stop and even though I floored it, I couldnt get any tire spin. I just hooked and went. Now, if I floor it from a dead stop I spin all the way to the rev-limiter and will spin even into second gear. :D

Nice, with the mods I have now if I floor it then Ill spin till about 4k in 1st gear, Ive even chirped 3rd a couple times.

Must be the 4.10 gears. I lost a great deal of backpressure with my exhuast mods so I lost some low end torque. Thats part of the reason why I had a hard time spinning my tires. Cant wait till I get my 4.30 gears and dyno tune. :D

This summer Ill be getting BBK LT's and a dyno tune. Im starting to think about a catted H so I have a little backpressure in there. But are any other mods needed for the converter?

No. Not really any I can think of. Just if you don't have a transmission cooler yet, I recommend getting one ASAP.

Typically speaking, a torque converter install will take about 6hrs. At least thats what I've been told and quoted at.

The place I go to charges $50 an hour, so that would equal about $300. Not as bad as I thought it would be. But thats still pushin $1,000. How much power would I expect to see with the same converter as you? Also what is the difference between a lock-up and a non lock- up converter?

As for how much hp, I'm not sure how much hp and torque increase you get. Thats not really the issue. It's similar to gears. Gears don't give you any power but work to get you into your powerband very fast. A torque converter lets you "spool" up the rpms for an increased launch power. Basically, its more of a take off mod than anything but it does help all around. I've seen gains between .35-.50 in the 1/4 mile with a torque converrter on n/a vehicles. Some supercharged vehicles see an even better gain.

As for lock-up vs. non-lock up, it has to do with the torque converter clutch. For a street/strip car that is n/a, you want a lock up converter that locks up the clutch at wide open throttle. When the clutch locks, it allows for maximum power transfer to the rear wheels. A non-lock up torque converter allows for better torque transfer down low but will cause a loss of rear wheel power at wide open throttle. For your application(street/strip), you want a lock up torque converter.

with a new TQ do you have to get anything reprogrammed? I also heard people feel like the car loses all sorts of power down low on normal driving and that the gas feels real mushy. Is there any truth to this?

Those won't fit with an auto tranny.

The MUST have mods for an auto, like the others have said:

Torque convertor
Jerry mod kit
Tranny cooler
4.10's minimum

PERIOD.

Confusion on Mods

I think it is interesting on how a guy will dog a Mod in favor of his when he has not experienced it. Especially a guy who does not know what stall speed is. You gotta do research! When you get people like the DarkNight and myself that have done the Jerry Mod and have actually done the mechanic work themselves it should lend to our creditability.

Like Darknight says the Line pressure increase which a chip and the Transgo kits do is a NO-NO. In fact I just read a thread the other day from Jerry answering a debate about his vs others. He explained in detail about why Transgo is messed up. He said that Ford Higher ups wanted the trans to shift even if it was held in 1st at WOT with the electronics. Warranty? Jerry says that the Transgo kit tries to change this by fooling it mechanically with line pressure and new in trans electronics going against the original engineering and this is where you run in to trouble. I have read a few threads where guys will say they love it (Transgo) and a month later a new thread from them says they shelled the trans. You never hear anyone bitch about the Jerry Mod. I have over 20k on mine and no problems!

I am 47 years old and have been modding, Street Racing when young and Track Drag Racing too. Some of these guys are teenagers or those that have everything done for them at a shop. So listen to veterans not posers. Sometimes it is hard to weed out these guys.

Good Thread everybody!!

My set-up is a little extreme for most people, but it is still my daily driver...

PA built AODE 4R70W SuperComp tranny
PA fully manual valve body with transbrake
PA SFI approved flexplate
PI 4200 stall lock-up torque converter
tranny cooler
B&M Hammer ratchet shifter
FRPP aluminum drive shaft
FRPP 4.10 gear

My best 60 foot is 1.447

I would suggest at least...

tranny cooler
2800 to 3200 stall lock-up torque converter
Jerry mod or PA street/strip valve body
4.10 gear
aluminum drive shaft

Stay away from a shift kit.

I don't think programming is a "must do" thing with a new converter. However, its not a bad idea either to make sure you got the best lock up points possible. As for the car dropping in power down low, it doesnt. It just feels that way because the higher the stall speed, the more rpms are required to get moving. Thats why I say I would'nt go any higher than a 3500rpm stall in a daily driven automatic.

Hey Guys,
I have put a B&M Shift Kit in my car and was wondering how difficult it is to add the cooler. How do they work to improve performance and where do they attach to?

The cooler isn't difficult to add at all. All you have to do is attach it's lines to the transmission lines that run fluid to the radiator and then mount the cooler to the front of the radiator.

I emailed CRMotorsports awhile ago and asked them about the bbk LT's and they said they will fit. And to Arnolds97 I hope you arent talking to me.

Then you would be the first to have them, to my knowledge.

Search the boards, here, Corral, Mod Depot. No one to my knowledge has BBK's on an auto trannied Stang. I could be wrong, but unless they changed their design, they won't fit.
