Has anybody seen or heard of "blowing out" the stock mufflers Like they used to do Glasspacks? I know the performance gains would'nt be there, but I don't have the money for cat-backs. I planned on ordering an O/R H, and modding the stock mufflers for more sound till I can get C/B's. Any suggestions?

If you still have the original mufflers on your '86 I'm sure they're about as close to being blown out as you're gonna get. An O/R H will probably make it plenty loud enough until you can afford a C/B or a pair of new mufflers.

I have heard of using a high pressure hose (like at a car wash) to accelerate breaking in mufflers, but that was a few years ago. I'm not sure about how that would work on modern mufflers and I'm not all the sure about the logic of shooting water into your exhaust.

. Why don't you do what I originally did on my '03 and have a couple of 2 Chamber flows welded in? It's not nearly as expensive as a complete cat back and it sounds great.

eh just take a screwdriver and pop a couple holes in the mufflers

seriously though, if you're that tight on money, go to a muffler shop or a auto zone and get a pair of $30 dynomax super turbo's and weld those in.

I know what you are talking about with the glasspacks. I've heard older guys talking about taking the car for a drive to get it warmed up and then spraying the glasspacks with cold water and it supposidly broke down the packing and made them louder. I don't think it would work on a conventional muffler.

o reven cheaper yet, get Glasspacks from Autozone i remember me almost buying some, but then money fell into my hands and bought some Flowmasters. id say get Gp's for now, theyre only like 15 bux each, 30 bux is worth it for now id say, and save on install and just clamp them on, since theyre only going to be temporary

A guy that I work with has glasspacks on his '02 GT and it actually sounds really good. Now how long it sounds good, may be a different story. Glasspacks aren't known for longevity.

I have an 03 gt and I wanted to have more sound also. I put a set of flowmasters American thunder 40 series. They sound awesome, but the sound came with a little bit of a price. I lost a little bit of low end torque. Not a ton of torque but it was noticeable. I have just reset the computer in my car by disconnecting the battery cable, then driving for 10 miles. I did that because I also changed out the stock filter with a K&N air filter along with the change in the mufflers. I figure I changed the amount of back-pressure and flow coming into the intake, so why not reset the computer and see if I get any torque back. I have not had a chance to test the performance yet because it is raining here and the roads are slick and its not going to stop till Monday. Also be aware If you change the stock mufflers on an 03 gt and don't like the new ones, you cant buy just stock mufflers from ford to put back on. They make you buy the tailpipe assembly. Cost? Ready for this...................................... $400.00. although I lost a little of low end torque I probably gained some top end speed , none of which I was looking for. Even with all that said I probably will keep the flowmasters on. I could compensate by adding gears but I think I will wait a couple of years for that. The sound is great! Just be sure that is what you want to do. Do your homework before you just jump in and start changing the exhaust. Some people on here will say Im full of $h1t about the torque but Im telling you I know how my car drives before and after the muffler change. check out this thread from another site
