web page info needed Please

An Old Dog who can still learn New Tricks has a request for help from some of the Web Page Guru members of :SNSign:

I got a question or two about those places that will host your pics for free and free places to build a personal web site like Geo Cities.

They all seem to put a limit on how much data can be down loaded from their place within a certain time period.

I assume when peeps down load data from their site it puts some kind of strain on their resources and if too many peeps do this it may cause them some kind of technical problem.

Are my assumptions in the ball park or is their reason for the limit nothing but a ploy to get you to use the pay-for service they provide?

Another question I got is based from my recent attempt to make some data available to the other members of :SNSign:

If I just made my files appear as pics for viewing on my site instead of zipping them up in a single 2.5 mb file for down load ................
Would that have been the better way to go about making the data available for everybody?

I'm guessing if I did it that way, those who wanted the data could have just right clicked the pic and did the ...... save as thing ....... Correct?

As you can see ...... I'm looking for some general info here.
I'm just trying to learn a thing or two so I won't be in the dark as much the next time I try to share stuff with the :SNSign: members.

You familiar with Linux or UNIX at all?

I could try to get you basically unlimited space for your website/pictures/vids/ect on my buddy's FreeBSD UNIX server...but you'd need to know how to use UNIX.

your first assumption is correct, Grady. you're only allowed a certain amount of bandwidth, especially on free accounts/sites. once the bandwidth is exceeded, the image/file won't show up for a while until things cool down, so to speak.

as for your second concern: i personally like people either posting the pics directly on here or at least pasting a direct link to the pic. now they are multiple files, hosting the zip on a server and posting a direct link to the zip is probably most convenient.

I have always tried to put my pic or pics I wanted to share with members directly on this site to be viewed with no linking bs ... just the pic to view in the thread along with the text if you know what I'm trying to say here

One more Q if you don't mind

I did some reading on several sites about basic web page stuff and if I understood it correctly ........................

Any time someone comes to my site and downloads that 2.5mb zip file ...... they have transfered that amount of data from the Geo Cities server to their pc.

Now ............

Lets say I loaded all of those 23 screen shots of j-peg files for viewing on my site. Does that mean every time someone viewed my tuning page ..............
they still would transfer that same amount of data to their pc

I kinda sorta think it would

Please confirm or deny if I'm starting to understand anything at all

no problem, grady. you've helped me out a couple of times with some tech so it's the least i can do.

for your third question, i'm not entirely sure. theoretically, whether they save the files or if they just show up on their browser, they are still being transfered. the difference, of course, is that the user won't have them stored in a location of their choosing since they didn't save--they'd be saved to a temp folder and deleted when they do a disk clean-up, etc. so yes, that amount of space is still being transfered, i would say. i could be wrong, however.

if this IS the case and if you are concerned about bandwidth usage, what you may want to do is instead of posting the picture, post a link to it--this way the user will have a choice of whether or not they want to view it, and if not, it'll save you bandwidth. hope that helps.

Anybody else think the same as Paul and myself ....................

if all the data is on one page
and
they load that page to view

the same amount of data (2.5mb) is transfered

AND

from Geo Cities perspective ...... either method I choose to use

zip file down loaded is 2.5mb transfered
or
page viewed is 2.5mb transfered

yes, you two are right. think of it in terms that what you're viewing on the web page IS being saved on your computer (temp internet files). so, when you load a page (lets say in this instance from geocities), your computer is technically downloading the contents of the page from geocities server and saving them in a temporary location on your computer. from geocitie's server's perspective, you are downloading the information, 2.5 mb's worth....does that make sense?

I always like to see things from the bottom line and in this case ...............

You guys have shown me the best thing for my site with the transfer limit
AND
making the data available to SN members is to leave the info in the zip file.

With that method ...................

The data is not moved UNLESS somebody utilizes the dl link

Okay grady...here is our turn to give back to you.
I have pretty much unlimited hosting and bandwidth. Well not unlimited, but more than we could all use. .
So I created an account for stangnet, for anyone to use.
Its an FTP account, this is a protocal like the website protocal thats used for transfering files to and from the internet. Its how web site designers put their files on the internet.
I have created a part of the internet dedicated to stangnet space.
You will need to download an ftp client, or use windows(Ill show you how to do that later, but I suggest downloading a client).

I love ws_ftp. Its very simple.
http://download.oldversion.com/wsftp508.exe
There is a link to it. If you download and install it, once you run it it will open with a connection screen.

Those are the values you should use. Create a new profile,
Host Name: ftp.renaxgade.net
User ID : stangnet@renaxgade.net
user password : freespace

ok once you connect it should be pretty self explanetory, just find the files on your computer and hit upload. They will transfer to space on the internet, at the address
http://renaxgade.net/stangnet

Browse to that site and the files will all be there.

i'd also recommend ws_ftp. i used it for my web systems development course and it's pretty simple. although, might wanna try using windows, too. i've only tried it once, but i think all you do is type in the ftp address (ftp://flks.sjdf.com) and you'll get prompted for a username and pw. either way, that's awesome of you to do that, synned.

So anyone that wants to use that server feel free.

If you want to do it in windows:

Open my computer, and find the address bar.
type in ftp://renaxgade.net
hit enter
Put your mouse over the white space near a folder and right click, go to login as.
Username stangnet@renaxgade.net
password freespace
And hit enter.
Now its just like a windows folder, copy and paste stuff there as you please.
