I just bought a mig welder...but still need to buy a tank...how long does say a 40CF tank last? an 80? a 20? I'm new to mig welding...previously I have only done stick welding...I understand mig welding is much easier

Hard to say really. Depends on the CFM you use when your welding, and if the tank has been used for anything else. A pure tank will last longer. I use 125's and 150's and they will last quite a while.
Mig is easier than stick for sure. No scratch starting, and not slag to break afterwards. But is not as forgiving with contaminants, and easier to blow through with. the wire pushes, so get it too hot, and bleh.

well, i got it to install the mustang II front suspension...the welder says its good up to 1/4" and from what I just looked at in the kit, the thickest metal is between 1/8" and 3/16"...I guess my question is will the 40 last me long enough to finish the welds I need to install the crossmember? refills don't bother me as long as I can finish the planned work i will be doing each day(an hour of actual welding on a guess?)

go with a medium size tank, about 3 ft high 8" in diameter, you will need about 2 for complete restoration. avoid those 6' big tanks, too heavy to move around as it weights about 150 lbs full.
