Went to the track for the first time (pics)

So yesterday I decided to go to the track for the first time. Heres the rundown on my car.

85 GT 5 speed
-89 headers, offroad x, flows, stock tails
-8.8 with 4.10s
-southside lower arms, boxed uppers
-subframes and welded torque boxes
-225 tires
-B springs
-212000km stock motor

Unfortunately for me my second gear synchro is absolutely shot! It was really slowing me down. Everytime I want to go to second I have to clutch, neutral, clutch second. But besides that the car ran decent for what it is. Here are the numbers.

Run 1
60' = 2.189
1/8 = 10.016
1/4 = 15.35
MPH = 93.29

Run 2
60' = 2.182
1/8 = 9.845
1/4 = 15.113
MPH = 93.93

Run 2 was in the semi finals of bracket racing. My car's number was a 15.12 and I ran a 15.113.

I also had another run but I don't know where the timeslip was. The MPH was 94.99. This car has the potential to run 14s no problem, I just have to tackle my transmission problem.

Launching at idle will kill your Ets i know from years of launching with a stock converter at about 1500 rpm, it falls flat on its face, with a 3000 stall i gained .5 in the 1/4. Which is probably what you would gain with tires and launching higher. Get the tranny fixed 1st though. How does it feel to be addicted now?

The reason the auto sucks is because of the 2.40 first gear. The 5-speeds (not 100% sure with the 85s) had a 3.35 first. Even launching off idle your back in the powerband extremely fast. The autos bog and lug through first, the 5-speed cars pull through first. I had an auto with a converter and changed it for a T5 and it was night and day in first gear.

I agree launching higher helps, but unlike an auto a 5-speed off idle isnt a total dog.

I know all about the 2nd gear issue. I had been 13.05 and was gunning for 12s when my 2nd gear got weak on me. I missed it two times and on my last pass granny shifted it (HATE doing that) and got it down the track, but it was a weak 13.2 pass. You could easily see a couple tenths with that issue!

I know you dont want to hear this but build a strong AOD; have the shift points set correctly with a good stall and keep the 4.10's. 14's all day. I would bet 14.30's with a good launch on drag dadials. I don't know what your budget is but you can get cai for about 100 bucks. Get some new plugs and wires as well. Cheap ways to gain a few ponies. I was able to hit 13's with 97 mph. I think you could hit that with a few basic bolt ons and an aod.

Wasnt aware of such a diff in the 1st gear ratios of the AOD and the 5 speed, either way launching off idle is hurting you. With stock 2.73s and a stock stall and no shiftkit i was running 14.6s at 100mph, it pissed me off to see guys running 13.5s with that trap speed. Gears + Stall equals at least 1 second for AODs. As far as HP mods your close to 94 mph thats not bad, considering all you have HP wise is xpipe and flowmasters. Start doing some basic bolt ons, bump that timing up and watch your trap speed climb and your ET drop!!

Why spend that money on an AOD. It cost me $400 to have my second gear fixed, and is still faster than most AODs with similar mods. Not to mention better gas mileage, and complete control on the street and track. I personally would go the cheaper easier, more fun route! :nice:

i think i like these three comments the most with my built AOD that i hear from kids sometimes at the High School-"why do you have a shift light in a automatic?" "all Automatics are slow" and "you cant shift a automatic"......Yeah, these are the guys driving the 16second honda beaters with the 5"inch muffler tip and cold air intake..i think thats my motivation to drive a reasonably quick built AOD car:nice: ..

Yeah my timing is set at 34 degrees at full. I also took out the spare tire and jack and other little stuff. Soon I will be deleting the smog and AC. I also think I'm buying a shifter/tranny off one of my friends so I will be able to go back and get some more respectable numbers.

Grasshopper. You have alot to learn. I would gladly line up with you at the track and show you how much I will jump you on the line. I would retard my timing so my trap would be the same as yours. That would make a believer out if you with autos. Other than spinning (in which I wont), I have no outside factors that would determine the race like you.ie: missing gears. On the highway from a 30-40 roll, yes the stick has the advantage. I had a stick in my SS. That is when i knew Auto was for me. With the same mods as I had except his was an auto, My buddy ran 11'60's at 118 mph. I ran 11.80's at 120 mph. There just isnt enough track to catch an auto because auto gets outta' the hole so hard.
