I ahve only raced one other time and that was in my 89, which I saw was there racing. I am hooked and will be going up there on a regular basis. My first run was a 14.96 @ 98.3mph with a 2.379 60'. I can't seem to keep the wheel spin down, but I did do a little better once the weather cooled down. I finished up the night with a 14.83 @ 95.12mph with a 2.554 60'.

Here is the question:

What do you guys/gals suggest for improving my 60' times? Besides a lot of practice.

A 96-98 Cobra is one of the hardest cars to launch, in my opinion. You have a very small window of RPM to launch in, if you are below that you'll bog, above it and you'll roast the tires. I never did have much success with my '98 Cobra. Based on more recent experience, I'd suggest that you try launching at about 3000 RPM and ride the clutch out a little to keep it from bogging. I would call a 2.0 60' time on street tires a success.

Your trap speed seems low also, are you granny shifting? Even with a crappy launch you should see more like 100-102.

I realized on my last run that I should not shift into 4th and it was really pinging bad at the top of the RPM's all at the end of evey run.

Interesting that its pinging, I thought the N/A 32V motors had knock sensors. Bad gas, or perhaps just really toasty (does it always ping at the top end)? I'd shift at 7000 (maybe 6700 or so on the factory tach), you should cross the line at just under 6000 in 3rd.

I think the pinging is caused by the heat. I am going to put a bottle of octane booster in it next time just to make sure.
Pffft forget about that crap, none of those octane boosters really raise the octane enough to make any difference. Just go to a paint store and get a gallon of toluene and put it all in a full tank of 92 and that will bring it to about 96 octane (more or less I believe).
As far as times you should see right around 13.5-13.7 on street tires....soooo practice practice practice. And for the launch dont use any rpms, just go off idle and as you release the clutch just floor the gas...this should produce a slight chirp of the tires and a very small bog, and ....voila.... there you have it, 2.0-2.1 60ft times. Hope it helps. :nice:

Mine was pinging pretty good today too. It was nice meeting you out there! The stangs were taking over!

Today was my first time running this car, I managed a best of 15.26 @ 96mph, with 2.414 60'. I am not sure what was going on, but should have been doing much better. Other than not being able to hook up in the 60', I'm not sure what went wrong today.

I raced woodburn on thursday:

temp 92
r/t .191
60' 1.885
330' 5.485
1/8 8.482
mph 83.36
1000 11.037
1/4 13.190
mph 105.04

That motor thats in my car used to be in our other f/b we raced, its best time was 12.7, it weighed about 300-400 lbs less then my car and it had 15' rims on it. So in other words I'm ok with my 60' but my 1/4 time should be better .. I NEED TO SHIFT QUICKER!! nonono: Ill see ya tonight!!

I agree. There comes a point where you just want to boost the octane enough to prevent detonation. I've seen cases where cars dyno'd better with 100 octane than 114. Friday, I ran 92 in it just to get a feel for how it was going to do, but in the past I've always run around 100 and done just fine.

Thanks for rubbin it in Mischa! I would kill for 13.1 right now, but I'll be seeing that by the end of the year, I'm determined.

That means you'll see more of my happy face up at Blue Oval!!

Misc stuff....

- I disagree with Paul, I have had good luck with "104+" octane booster. (when I had iron heads)

- 100 octane should yeild more power than 114, as long as you have clean combustion (no det, no pre-ig) because of the slower burn rate of the 114. (imho)

- 13.1 dang.... I could get beat by a girl.

..........but she'll probably red-light. :rlaugh:
