Hey guys, simply what the title says...What are the H/C/I options for a 460? I hear a lot about the trickflow a460s, Are those more a strip head than street? I need something mainly for the street, but something really sick.

I will be purchasing a JY 460 in about 2 weeks and I need to start researching my options. Thanks guys.

A set of DOVE-C heads and a Performer RPM cam and intake make a sweet street combo. Idles kinda rough unless you have a high stall and set it at 1000 rpm though.

EXTREME torque right off idle! 100 ft burnouts are no problem with huge tires.

oh yeah, the combo I'm talking about has flat top pistons. No pinging with the big cam.

the cobra jet aluminum heads from ford are prolly the best for a street car. Blue thunder makes two sets a ford port and a chevy port (exhaust only). I personally like the blue thunders, but a good stock set of 460 heads if built right would do 10's easily with right combo, cam, heads, intake etc.
Keep us posted on your build up! we love our big block mustangs!!!:nice:

I like a mild combo, performer dual plane intake, 650 to 750cfm carb, around a .460-.480 lift cam. with a good combo on transmission and rear gear.....go with something in the 3.00 to 3.50 range on rear end gear. especially if you use a C-6 or C-4 (yea a C-4 will actually fit if you use the 400M bell and a truck C-4 (I've done it)!

I just wish MAC would build a set of SHORTIES for the 460 that would be the ****nit!

So you say the cobra jets are the best for a street car, so then what do you think about the ford racing crate motors????

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=6587

Whats the deal with the cam in this motor? Is it a big cam or what?

My two options are have the engine built and tuned at a shop ( i know of a good one that specializes in carb'd motors ) or order the crate motor. Ive never built a motor, and dont want this one to be my first.

If I had the engine built I would use JY block/crank/rods and then they would build up the rest and dyno tune the engine when its done.

What do you think?

That crate motor cam makes a Performer rpm look small. What to do depends on whether you will race and how fast you want to go.

The dove-c heads with flat tops and the rpm stuff will flatten your eyeballs and have great throttle response. Probably 400-500 lbs torque from 2000-5000 rpm. As far as rough idle its just a little choppy at 900 rpm or so. Nothing a 2000 stall wouldn't cure. Definitely $1000cheaper to go with iron heads. But is that what you want?

I haven't driven aluminum cobra jet heads but iron ones are boggy unless you rev it up a little. When you floor it the cobra jet heads come alive.

LOL, with a 6 speed you could just start in 3rd and shift to 6th with a mild torque monster 460. Sounds like the combo I mentioned is a little too mild for you.

Get the crate motor....unless you don't like a wild idle. Sounds like you have the funds. No stress with a tested combo all put together 6 months before you bought it.

not sure how the TKO would mate up but that would defintly be a fun ride. I can tell ya this though. A mild 460 tuned properly will still be one hellova fast mustang, and will be reliable as a mild 302! A mild 460 is like a 302 HO on nitrous..........all of the time! The old saying "pin you to your seat" comes to mind when you talk big block power. It aint just a saying either! It's true!
just remember how well a stock 5.0 HO motor runs..with just a few add on parts Intake, cam, good valve job...etc etc....and build the 460 up accordingly.

DO not hogg out the iron 460 heads. They are plenty big for a extremely fast street car with only a good valve job! Velocity is the key. Remember bigger is NOT always better. IF your not building an all out RACE engine, you will be wasting your money, and causing your performace to actually GO down! good luck

Running a mild 460 is out of the question.

I run nitrous on my stock motor right now, and its not fast enough at all, it is a little fun though. Mid 12's definitally doesnt pin me to the seat in my opinion.

And the TKO600 works with an SFI bell housing.

5.0tbirdguy - How wild is the idle on the crate motor? That crate motor looks good, but I dont know how the cam is going to be.

Btw, the TKO600 is a 5spd.

I really don't know, just guessing by the cam specs. It has about 10* more duration at .050 than one with a slightly choppy 900 rpm idle. Not likely, but it could even idle better if there was less overlap.

Just remember a 460 can handle alot more cam than a small motor. With a standard transmission and no a/c you should have no problem for a weekend ride. Ask the guys at Ford Motorsport. They should know and hopefully be honest.
