what cam to choose?

well lets see ive been at college all semester so havent really had the itme to build a decent motor and now that im on break i have to work so im limited to time. ive already done exhaust,rebuilt the aod trans,installed a 3,000 stahl converter and a b&m shift kit. im in the middle of getting my 5spd,pedal assembly clutch and so on to do the swap.id like to put a cam in it over the winter using the stock intake and everything else but was wondering what would be the best cam or biggest one i can put in with out having to change pistons and so forth.next year when i have more time ill build my motor but want a little more sound for now.

ecam or custom grind. Its supposed to be for automatics, but u might have to change the valve springs as well because they float with over .500 lift and the ecam is .498 with 1.6rr and .529 with 1.7's. Not positive on P/V clearance but ecam should fit and with a 3000 stall it should do nice. You might want to invest in a tranny cooler tho. You can get the police kit Im sure from some site.

That "sound" will be the sound of your money and performance going down the drain. You will get worse gas mileage, little to no power gains, and you will most likely lose torque down low. When you build your motor next year like you said, that's when I would reccomend putting in a new cam. The stock cam is actually very well matched to the stock heads.

yea... what he said... I just didnt want to shoot down ur thread. But the stock cam is ur best bet without heads and intake to go with it. Just spend some money making the tires stick better or somethin.

You would probably be "happier" with just a set of nice roller rockers for ur stock heads. They will really free up some hp because of the friction and energy lost with the stock rockers. Probably feel more with the rockers than with a cam on the stock heads/intake.

Given what you described, the best single changes you can make would be to put 3.73 gears in it, and to either have the stock lower intake ported, or add an aftermarket intake. The stock lower intake is the biggest restriction on the whole car - it should be the first mod. Putting a 'cam' in it without changing anything else will likely only hurt the performance and make it not much fun to drive on the street.

Why rebuild the AOD and put a stall in it if you're gonna do a T5 swap?

making sense...

i already have a tranny cooler on the car. the transmission has been rebuilt and at the time of the rebuild i installed the shift kit,stahl converter and gears. im still not happy with the transmission therefore the reason converting to stick.ive driven stick before and like it better. i dont really plan on driving the car much untill i build the motor. i kinda got stuck in a transportation bind but now im putting my second car on the road so more than likely i wont drive it much untill the spring of 2006. i do have an aftermarket intake tube w/ a k&n filter attached and a accel ign coil. i dont have any motor work done as of now and the engine had 105,000 mi on it.i also have the exhaust done like said in prior post mac prochamber h-pipe w/ flowmasters. i wanted to do something to the motor over the winter but dont have much cash to play with this year. my friend is giving me his stock heads and both intakes for me to play with(port,polish and so on). so i guess im lookin for more ideas and not to costly for things i can do with roughly $600. thanks

Here's a link to guide you in self porting - http://www.cmc.net/~xero/Mousesporting.html; also, send a pm to tmoss - he can port that lower for you and make it work very effectively for a budget price with the self ported heads. Put a new set of valve springs on the heads, and the gears - and those changes will make a big difference for about your $600 budget.

about the porting...

well i already have the gears and as far as the porting goes my boss and i are doing it since we work at a machine shop so it still kinda leaves my $600 budget open since porting isnt gonna cost me anything other than maybe a 12-pack of beer for my boss to help.so if you still have suggestions id appreciate it. thanks guys

First suggestion would be to fill out a 'signature' line so we know what other mods you have - that way we won't have to guess at what to suggest.

If you don't have them, first thing is to weld in a set of subframe connectors - your machine shop buddies can help you with that.

Seeing all that - like most of us said before - wait on the cam change until you can do the heads; pull the silencer out of the fenderwell and put a K&N flat panel in the stock box; set the timing from 10 to 14 btdc; put a set of long tubes on it (1.5" primaries); aftermarket intake manifold or have tmoss port your stock lower intake. Those changes and the subframe connectors will make a difference you can really feel without impacting drivability - might even help fuel mileage a bit (as will the T5).
