I ran thumpers for over two years. The advantage of them is the price as well as the reliability and ease of install. Whenever you install an aftermarket part especially a set of heads that are so different from the factory, your going to run into issues. There is nothing ore relaible than a iron head. Iron is a much harder and stronger metal, and less likley to distort to heat. I am not saying that aluminum heads warp easy, but it is much less likley on an iron headed setup. The disavantages of iron heads are the weight, and the fact they tend to keep in the heat, therefore more chances for detonation so you have to keep that in mind when running a lot of boost or compression.
Thumper heads are a great stepping stone. If your car is stock or almost stock they will do a comparable job but you'll have more money for other mods therefore you'll be able to do more and go faster with the same amount of money. I don't care what anyone says, there is no your going to be able to use the larger heads through the stock components. My car ran 8.4 at 85mph on a worn out motor in the 1/8th mile launching off idle at a bad track. I can swear to and have witnesses that I embarrassed a few aftermarket headed combo's. There is a lot more than just heads to win a race.
