What could possibly be wrong with my amp?

If your amp is powering on but u are getting no output to your subs..... u may have had the same problyems as me. 1) you may have melted the RCA circuit board, that happened with my autotek amp, it would play for a while then no sound but the amp was still on, bout $70-75 for a new board, or 2) You may have burned out the RCA preouts on the deck, i had this same problem with my pioneer deck, they would work just fine when the engine was off but the key was on, but once the engine was on they were done

Sounds like a bad ground or not big enough ground. What you discribed is called cliping. Try a bigger wire and more solid mounting spot for your ground.

Dagger: The first time I wired up the sub i did it on my own and followed the second diagram "which was included with the amp". I still had this same problem, i took it to my friend and while we were trying to figure out what the problem was he rewired it down to 2 ohms. I am going to wire it up to 4 ohms again and see what happens though.

How would the burn out of the deck? And why would the motor running affect it?
Here is the thing with the deck pre out. I originally though that the sub preout had been fried but when I switched the Rear Channel pre out With the Sub pre out It proved that wrong. The sub Preout sent a prefect signal to the rear speakers through the $ channel amp but the Rear preout did not have an effect of the sub amp. So the rcas from the deck are working.
What would cause the RCA Circuit in the amp to melt?

If the ground were bad would the amp turn on at all? It is always turned on but i dosnt send a signal to the woofer. The wire that is grounding it is 8gauge.

Sorry for all the questions guys but that is how you learn.
I cannot tell you enough how much i appreciate your help.

i have a couple fuses on the sides of my amps, dunno if you have the same. maybe check to see if one's loose? chcek all of your connections, maybe you have a bad ground. im sure if the amp was shot, it wouldnt get power. maybe your subs are blown? my amps overheat and blew both of my 10" subs before. sucked...

I vote for ur amp being bad...try and borrow a friends so u could eliminate that from the situation.

I would go ahead and wire it for 4 ohms like daggar says. Sound quality is directly proportional to ohms anyway(imho)... but looking back at the original, you never mentioned your head unit? Possible your head unit needs to know your using the preouts? I hava an alpine that gets fussy if I dont tell it. I also am not familiar with your amp, but a few companies used to like to claim they were 2 ohm stable(they would fail to mention the stableness is time dependant). I would throw it back to the 4 and see if you still have the problem. If you do, and its wired like daggar threw up here, take the amp back and get a different/new one.

foxstang, weird you had 2 different problems with rca boards and outputs, my instinct would tell me once its fried its never coming back on. I Learn something new every day. and to the original poster, lets hope you dont have a fried board.

Are there any cool stereo shops where you live? I would buddy up with the head installer and get his input as well.
