What Do You Carry And Why?

Did you figure out if the thumb lever is a safety? It sure looks like one. Giving the empty cartridge a love tap with the dowel or cleaning rod might be just what it needs.

I'm curious to know what the function of that bar on the other side of the action is.

Here is the response I received from my Dad:

Remington produced, in World War I, a US version of the British Model 1917. The US version was chambered for the M1903 (30-06) cartridge. After the war Remington produced the same rifle without the large rear sight as a sporting rifle as the Remington Model 30.

Very helpful. Thank you.

I figured the stock and barrel had been changed.
I'm familiar with this, because I still have my Dad's "sporterized" Springfield 1903-A3. He had a target barrel put on it, along with a nice Monte-Carlo style stock and a scope sight. Sucker weighs about 12 lbs. after that! It went from being a deer gun to the deer STAND gun. Still shoots well, I ran a few rounds through it just a couple of years ago.

It really is just like every first-person shooter I've played that I really enjoyed. LoL

You know, the ones where you find a gun you really get along with and can upgrade it throughout the game. :D

That reminds me... Give "Outlanders" a try if you've never played it.

Speaking of Springfield...I used to live in Springfield Ma. Home of Smith and Wesson, and they are moving out with three hundred jobs. Springfield is a distressed area the needs all the jobs they can get. I bet they are leaving because of the states anti gun status.

I figured the stock and barrel had been changed. He sees gun parts like we see car parts that tell us what year that car [really] is.
So I have been reading. The models 30 and 30 express had sporting barrels from the factory, especially by this high serial number. Production was started with leftover military parts, and the models were phased out of production for the model 721 etc. by the end of WWII.
The maple colored stock is not a stock stock. But it feels like a good fit.
I am glad I have the smaller loads for varmits. These rifles were used in polar bear hunts, and still are for water buffalo etc. African safari hunts.
Unless there is an invasion or I want to feed my family deer, a .223 would have been a better fit. But since it was largely unused for 50 years, I might as well be ready for invading water buffalo herds.

I like the 30-06. My guess is that it's going to kick less than you think.

It's a nice round to have on-hand when the coyotes are hiding behind cars. :O_o:
I’m not worried about the kick after a 12ga shotgun I like, and using a Jap 6.5 a number of years ago. Even after loosing some fat weight and a lot of water three years ago, I still have enough mass it will not knock me on my rear. :D

I am concerned about a round going through the coyote, Bob (the cat) or a skinny cougar intact. The old varmit loads have a soft tip that should mushroom. The military rounds do not. (Something about the Hague convention of 1899 and Dum Dum bullets.)
So, what rounds should I request for targets, and what specific rounds should I ask for for for hunting in this new to me 30-06? 83879A19-D75E-4BC5-9262-440361AF2E38.png

I worked for a Company that was owned by a large British conglomerate named Tomkins.... At the time I was working, Tomkins also owned Smith & Wesson guns.... Based on my observations, they could care less about Americans or America except for how many pounds are crossing the pond ( I was middle management and this was how the conversations went....... Can't say for certain that Tomkins still owns S&W...
Seems as if ( CRS here) S&W was the first to put a trigger guard, while Tomkins was the owner, on pistols that struck a nerve with America... LOL... Do you think the brits give a rats ass about America's 2nd amendment??????

I get what you mean but what I meant was that it might actually be a [pleasure] to shoot. Even if you don't use it for anything other than fun.

For ammo, try some of it all. Few things warm the heart better than blasting a 5-gallon jug of water with the hottest loads you can find. :D

It’s going to have to be 1 gallon jugs from distilled water or rinsed out milk jugs. I do not have used water cooler jugs, so I will just have to aim carefully. I was thinking about getting a steel plate instead of just plastic or paper targets.
