Putting a salvage yard AOD in my '65.

The trans is from a '91 Gran Marquis.

I went to Autozone and the counter guy said it could be Mercon V or Mercon which are not compatible. He said to check the owners manual or the dipstick. I didn't think about the dipstick. I'll have to check that when I get home. I guess they started using Merc V in some of the applications around that time frame.

dexron II/mercon is the correct fluid for your trans.

Thanks.

I was doing some research and found all kind of info, but I just like to hear from Stangnetters.

I drained the Torque converter, and will be installing it tonight. I'll remove the pan and change filter once the engine & transmission are installed.

I'll pick up Mercon on the way home. So I'm guessing I'll need at least 6-7 quarts.

What's the procedure for draining and filling the TQ, then installing and filling the rest of the tranny?

torque converter has drain plug, drain it there. use teflon paste on plug, then reinstall. fillt converter with 1.5 qts of fluid, through the snout. Install on trans, rotate and jimmy it until it drops three times. install trans on motor, make SURE NOT TO USE TRANS BOLTS TO DRAW TRANS ONTO ENGINE. make sure studs on converter line up with flexplate. hoorah!
