What Gears????

What gears would you guys suggest i put in my stang this spring???? My mods are going to be all bolt-on's for this summer so no reall big HP gains. I want more torque but I also want to be able to cruise down the highway and still be alright.

3:73 - 5 speed
4:10 - auto

Mines a 5spd...I did 355s, ran em 2 seasons, then did 373s...those been in 2 seasons...This year Im putting the 355s back in....1st gear with 373s is a P.I.T.A. to me...damn short shifting all the time...or you can take off in 2nd all the time..

373s ate some gas milage to...Both have good and bad points...depends on what your after...The 373s netted me jack in the 1/4....To me they were a wash..I was more content with the 355s..
the 355s over the stock 273s are like night and day...

i had 3:73s on my 92 gt before i sold it to get my cobra and loved them....i didn't loose and gas mileage.....most here seem to like either 3:73s or 4:10s....i have 3:73s i need to install in my car....

4.10's.

Highway will be fine, I would know i'm on the highway a LOT with my 4.30's..No issues I had 373's and swapped them out for 430's and its MUCH better for my combo. gas mileage was NOT effected!

Hmmmmmm........o.k. well how good is gas mileage with the 4.10???? Since the car is going to be a DD i want to keep down gas sucking as much as possible, but I'm definitly getting gears this spring/summer.

I recommend 3.73's if you have a manual or 4.10's if it's an AODE. While gas mileage (from the experiences I've had with my car and other friends'/relatives' cars) probably won't go down much if driven the same, after a big gear change it seems like the feet always get heavier. Basically, if you drive it the same the difference in gas mileage will be minimal if anything, but most people DON'T drive it the same after a gear install. Take that for what you will.

with 410s and a 5speed at like 80mph ull be hundreds of rpm away from the stock 5.0s peak torque which is made at 3800. i dont like that at all, engines spinning for nothing. ever since i got my 373s i cruise more often at 65mph then i use to on the highway, i used to cruise at 70-75 mosty before with 308s

i agree with GRN92LX. i have 430s with a 5 spd, mileage is not that bad (17-18 in the city). the power in any gear is well worth it.

I'd say go 3.73s assuming you have a 5 speed. Not so much for gas mileage but from my personal experience its alot easier to lauch the car consistantly with 3.73s. If you have 4.10s and street tires you can completely forget about 1st gear cause you'll never have traction on a hard launch. I think 3.73s are a good all around gear for a bolt on DD 5.0. Everyone has their own personal preference though and are going to tell you different things.

agreed. 3:73's are good for a daily driver.....around town 4:10's are great, but if you drive on the highway a min. are 3:73's

Also, imo 3:55's work well also if your daily drive is on the highway

I have 3:27's with my turbo setup, and im very happy with those on the highway lol

So True ... Something to be said about what you speak of here

Thats why it is not valid to say this or that ratio is ...........
"The One ... For Everyone"

True ... at such and such speed you turn such and such rpm .......
No matter what kind of combo you got

BUT

It is all about the power band
and
how it is configured

General rule of thumb is ..........

The higher the band has been shifted .........
The steeper the ratio needs to be

RPM vrs Highway Speed is only a part of the .........
Which ratio selection issue

Or in other words .........

410's don't act the same in a little stocker Stang
as opposed to
A modded Head Cam Intake Stang

i would think gas mileage wouldnt be much of a concern with a v8 stang owner. i know fuel economy wasnt a concern when i bought mine.

I love my 3.73's in my 95 GT auto equipped car, to me they feel just right. I've got 4.30's in my f150, it pulls my boat great but the shifts go by very quick.

Since your engine is stock or even the basic h/c/i mods, get 3.73's.

4.10's are a bit much...and anything after that on a daily driver is just digging a hole. More piston speed as well. Engine will be affected over a longer period of time.

Be careful to who you get your advise from, some on here have other mods of transportation that are more gas friendly, or have short distances to work.

On an averag of about once every week or two (depends) I make a 300 mile trip. I WOULD NOT want anything more than 3.73's on the interstate. Besides from it be annoying...makes your car sound ragged and like it is trying to hard.

Yeah I know most owner's don't think about it but I'm a college student with a part time job............................it matters to me alot since it's my DD

As for comments about "who cars about gas mileage"...would you rather have 2mpg or 20mpg?

More rpm ='s more fuel, it is very simple. Nothing complicated about it. The more gear, the more rpm. The more fuel consumed.

Also, gears do not give one power. It is a band-aid for lack of power.

It is best to have less and want more than have more and need less.
