What is needed to run an explorer tb?

Assuming your swapping to a Fox style set-up...you have to rotate the linkage ball....the Ex is on the opposite side of a Fox....I ran one, a 96 Ex on mine for awhile....worked fine...
You want the TPS and IAC plugs off an Explorer to...

Heres what your throttle linkage looks like....ball on the left..

heres what it needs to look like...cut it, rotate it 180 and reweld...Viola...she works...the ball is now on the Right....otherwise take the guts out of a Fox and swap it into the Ex...Relocating and welding seemed easier to me....

Rio, I read your post and I have a couple of questions. Why couldent you just cut off the end where the stock cables clip to on the tb and weld it up to the explorer tb? Why can you use your stock iac? Did you feel that the swap was wort it?

I found it to be easiest to just cut and move the ball....you can try your ideas on the 95 guts...its all trial and error...i reveiwed all those ideas...this was a 15 minute fix...your gonna get into some fab work either way...one guy on Corral actually has his SN95 65TB mounted and working, he had to fab throttle cable brackets and such...
I havent even attempted the cruise attachment yet...i never use it so it wasnt a priority to get that on....this is kinda virgin ground were playing with on these swaps...
A Fox TB has the triangular throttle blade were both the throttle and cruise connect for it...a Fox TB MAY make it easier to adapt the cruise and it has the connector ball for the cruise cable, the Ex does not...whether a Fox cruise cable can be swapped in place of a SN95 and work is an unknown...but it prolly more likely to be "workable" with some fab work...


I was using the Ex TPS and IAC as they were on the unit and wanted to sell my old 65......the TPS plug on the 95 WILL fit a Fox tb, but not the Ex, the prongs are different..The IAC on the Ex also had a different plug then the SN95...A trip to a salvage yard for those 2 plugs off an explorer will do...

I did the swap as a Winter project, Fox style TB that is....did run the car for 5 minutes after i set the TPS...all seemed cool...I then tore it all apart to swap to a 93 Cobra intake...biggest gain i have heard mentioned is mostly in throttle response, and blower cars respond well to this swap...good post in Corral concerning this swap...
my cars just getting stuff painted up at the moment....im gonna re-dyno here real soon...that should throw some numbers out for what there worth....
To be honest with you, find a FOX TB to do the swap..the throttle ball is on the correct side for the Fox cable, the IAC/TPS plugs are the same as a SN95, and you have the triangular throttle blade with the cruise connector on and ready to adapt if you so choose....
Thats my story....either will work....
 
Resurrecting an old thread looking for some help.

  1. I am swapping a 95GT drivetrain (engine, t5, 8.8", computer & harness) into my 68 coupe. I have swapped out the stock intake for an Exploder upper, gt40 lower, explorer TB, IAB, and TPS. I am looking for some help and hoping you guys can help.
  2. Will the Explorer TPS, and IAB work with the 95 GT computer?
    I know they use different plugs than the 95 GT. I purchased the correct ones from www.fordfuelinjection.com (unless you are wanting to buy something they do not respond to email questions)
  3. Assuming the explorer TPS will work, the 95 TPS plug has gry/red, gry/wht, and brn/wht wires, the Explorer plug has three orange wires. Anybody know which wire corresponds to what?

Thanks for any help. I was hoping to get this thing running this past summer. Obviously I missed that deadline but before the snow starts flying and the garage gets cold might still be a possibilty.

tmoss I was hoping you would respond to this, thanks. My question is which wire goes to what?

  • The 95 GT plug has gry/red, gry/wht, and brn/wht wires.
  • The Explorer pigtail has three bright orange wires.
  • Both plugs have a similar "notch" or ear" above or below one pin.

I will try and post pics when I get home.

I used an ohmeter to find which two wires did not change resistance when the actuator (potentiometer wipe arm)was moved - those are the brown/white and black/white leads. Then find which wire causes the resistance to change no matter which of the other two wires you use (just to confirm) and that is the gray/white wiper lead. Connect em up like that diagram.

Thank you for the help. Most of the people I have looked to for help on this around here don't understand why I don't just throw a carb and intake on this and be done. That or their eyes glaze over at the mention of EFI and computer control :) I guess I like the challenge.

Last night I measured the resistance of all three TPS sensors I have:

It is pretty easy to see which wire corresponds with each wire on the different sensors.

This brings up some questions:

The Mustang TPS sensors have a range of 0.27 - 1.00, and the Explorer TPS has a range 0.31 - 2.99. Does the actual value matter or does the EEC just need a range between high and low? Will the Explorer TPS sensor work with the Mustang EEC?

Also it looks as though I cannot use the 95 mustang TPS on the Explorer TB because the butterfly shaft is indexed incorrectly. My choice it seems is between the pre 93 TPS and the Explorer TPS. I plan on trying both just to see what happens with the different resistance ranges. Is anybody running the Explorer TPS? I think you said you were tmoss, but on your site you show a pre 93 TPS on an Explorer TB.

Tha actual resistance of the pot is not significant - the EEC is reading the voltage drop across the pot resistor - not the resistance itself. If it works on my car, it's a safe bet it will work on yours.

I would not run a carb on the street again - only in a race car myself, and even then I'd lean toward efi.

The site does show a 86-93 TPS, but I decided to use the Explorer after having trouble adjusting the earlier TPS on the TB.
