...What do you think is the best h/c/i combo for a stock 5.0? How much power will this put to the wheels on a stock engine or an engine with minimal modifications? Thanks!

yeah I knnow I meant with a stock bottom end... I was also talking about the rest of the car...not as to which h/c/i..but for the dyno. I wanted to know what they would do on a stock car...stock headers. mid pipe...and all that ****...

I belive the setup which seems to always get good results is:

AFR 165's
Custom Cam
Edelbrock intake (or holley)

Now cheap, but still really effective:

Thumper ported E7's (GT40 another choice)
TMOSS ported lower (Cobra or explorer also)
Stock or mild cam.

ty...would the AFR 185's be any better? ...also do you know what kind of power is at the wheels with just the 165s, custom cam and the edelbrock or holley intake. I was looking and I saw the new gt40X heads, they claim +65hp...how much hp do the AFR's give you? Thanks a lot

ok ty. I was hoping in eventually getting a 347 stroker block, but I wanted to get the h/c/i first...now if I were to get the 347 could I put those heads cam and intake on the 347? Or would the 165's be too small? b/c if the 165s would be too small wouldnt it be better to just go with the 185s now? thanks

Daniel 5.0 could you please write me a PM or just post it here. Your car is what I need to know about. My car used to go 102 in the 1/4, now I cannot get anymore than 95 mph out of it. I have a very similar set-up to you, but with longtubes.

I need to know your fuel press, ign.timing, (also what degree it starts to detonate), what rpm do you shift at, and what your 1/8th mph is. Thank you.

If you plan on stepping up to a 347 (in the relative near future) you are better off with the 185's and an RPM II intake ...

These parts are a little big for the 302 (loss of low end torque) but will pull hard up top ... then when switched will compliment the 347 perfectly.

On the otherhand, the 165's & Performer will work perfect on a 302, and also make good street torque on a 347, but will starve the 347 a bit on the top end. (Both 165's & 185's flow better than GT40X heads.)

Another thing to keep in mind is injector size and settings the stock EFI computer has. An engine that pulls more air will want more fuel to maximize its power potential.

A typical tried and true street/daily driver setup for a 302:
AFR165, Ford 'E' cam, GT40 intake (better than Performer), 70tb, 75maf, 24# injectors ... decent exhaust, fuel pump and afpr ...
These combined parts usually make in the neighborhood of 285hp/315tq at the wheels with a nice broad power curve. That's a lot better than the stock 190/260 while retaining good driveability.

A good street/daily driver setup for a 347:
AFR185, Comp Cams XE266HR or custom, RPM II, 70tb, 75+maf, 30# injectors ... decent exhaust, fuel pump and afpr ...
These will make roughly 360hp/370tq at the wheels with a broad power curve.

I wouldn't rack your brain too much on this though ... when you move a good portion away from stock power you'll be smiling.

OK thanks. I am going to be buying 86+ fox in the next few months. I have looked into prices and all that **** quite a bit. Around here I can get a nice stock fox for around 4,000 (with a nice exterior, maybe even newly painted). This would leave me anywhere from 4,500 to 7,000 for mods immediatly. I do not want to go p/a right away. So my first engine mods were going to be h/c/i...and eventaully upgrade to a 347. Now I wasnt sure whether I should get either the ford racing 347 stroker kit or the probe 347 street fighter kit...or I could buy the 347 short block from ford racing. My only concern would be that if I used the stock block with the kit that I would make too much power and possibly crack the block. How much fly wheel power would 360rwhp be = to? Regardless of which kit or block I buy...would it be better to go with the 347 right away, or wait until I get the h/c/i and then go stroker?

Installed the new 306 (afr 185's, ported stock intake, stock cam, 65mm tb, bolt-ons) in the '90. Put in a T5, still has stock 2.73's.
Here are the chassis dyno numbers (dynojet at Walsh Motorsports): rwhp/rwtq

2250 130/305 (initial reading)
2500 148/310
3000 188/328
3500 232/346
3700 /351 (peak tq)
4000 260/340
4500 272/320
4700 275/ (peak hp)
5000 270/282
5500 245/233

Swap ported stocke intake for Edel Performer and should still be one potent combo with excellent manners. I haven't too many AFR165 combos making 305rwtq @ 2250rpm.

360rwhp with that cam in a 347 is extremely generous estimate!

Start with a car ... an '89-'93 is the best platform to start with. It's already a Mass Air car and will adapt to mods better than an '86 -'88. My favored year is the '89 because tilt wheel and no air bag.

For a 347 I personally would buy the Probe (CHP) kit over the Ford shortblock.
A stock block is usually good up to about 475flywheel.

On our fox cars we use a generic factor of 15% to calculate drive train loss ... so 360 is an estimation based on 85% of flywheel output which in this case is 420. A light fox car with 360rwhp doesn't suffer from lack of power ...

If I had a clean fox and 7K to play with I would button down the chassis, suspension and brakes and then buy speed parts for a 302 ... if down the road I wanted more, then I would decide how close to insane I wanted to get.

A built 347 is better off with a solid platform to manipulate. A 302 with good reliable bolt on parts is not a slouch either.
