what is this?

i bought this '89 140mph speedo online and it has a white electric box with lights on the rightside. my '89 mustang has 85mph speedo without the white electircal box. my question is what the hell is the white box for? will i still be able to use it on my '89 stang? can i just take it off? modify it? anything???

That looks like the light bulb box that goes behind the dummy lights on the lower right hand side of the gauge cluster trim. There are 4 dummy lights there, which I can't recall what they are. My '89 has the cutout in the trim but no bulb box so no you don't NEED it. The plug on the back of the gauges in the second post I believe you do need. There should be a plug for it from the factory in the dash. If there isn't just leave it unplugged and hook up the other plug and switch on the car to make sure the gauges work.

Dummy lights light up to tell you when the Oil is low, Power Steering Fluid is low, Antifreeze is low, etc. I think there are four on our cars, but I am not sure what they are for. Mine doesnt have the box on the cluster, but it does have the little "screens" in the console.
