what rear end

what rear end would you put in a 65 mustang that is pushing around 330 to the wheels. right now it has a stock 8 in and a t5 tranny. thanks Nick

Many believe the 8" is good to about 400 hp depending on the type of transmission and tires. I'm not questioning this "conventional wisedom". However, Ford upgraded to the 9" with the hipo (271 hp) and all large blocks. Apparently Ford did thought the limit for reliability was somewhere south of 270 hp.

If you have a factory stock 65 8 inch then you are not gonna make it too long. Atleast a set of 66 axles and a 67+ case, mini spool and a granada housing. There is just about nothing on the 65 8 inch that is any good for handling power. I would start shopping for a 9 inch or atleast a maveric or granada 8 inch to build.

If you can afford it its alway nice to be over prepared. A 9in is going to hold up to abuse more than an 8" in most cases. If you want to keep the 8" and not bother with hunting for a 9" and getting it sized for your car then you'll be okay. Ford liked overkill, putting a 9" on 271 hp is that. But, it leaves room for more hp.

I wouldn't change it, unless you break the 8". I'm one of those who think the 8" is good for more than 270. If you're needing to change gears and such anyway, go ahead and get a 9" trac-loc with 3.55 gears. Stay away from lockers and spools. You won't like the ride, if you do mostly non-drag strip driving. If you're buying new, go ahead and get 31 spline axles instead of 28, since they cost the same.

As far as I know, both the 8" and 9" use the same axles ( if the 9 has 28 splined axles) so what makes the 65 8" alxes so fragile?

the 65-66 axles tapper down in the middle. If you slide one out you can totaly tell.

I would sugest saving money for a 9". You will probobly be ok for a while, but eventualy it will break. It actualy might be fine for ever if you limit the riders to 2. I had 4 people in my car when i nailed second gear.. BOOM! So now i have a 9".

The new DPI Black Gold street 9" is the best differential I've experienced in a mustang.

i beg to differ

i have broken 1 housing, 2 sets of gears professionaly installed and shattered 1 auburn locker, and bent an axle all with a little 302 and street tires.
