I have the 18x8.5 alloy bullets with the stock BFG g-force 235/50/18. How big of a tire can I put on the rear with the stock 8.5 inch rim. I don't want a real low profile look but I want to go as wide as I can. I have 275/40/ 17 on 9" rims on my '95, will a 275/40/18 fit on 8.5's?

I've heard you can get a 275 on the stock wheel. I'm not sure of the width on the stock 17" bullitt wheel...but I was going to go with 255s just to be safe. The local tire shops all say that a 255 is not a problem for my wheel.

I would say a 275/40-18 is too wide for the 8.5" wheel. That is the size tire they run on the 10" Roush wheels. I have a 255/45-18 on my 8.5" wheel and it is perfect. You may be able to get a 265 safely on there if it's not too low of a profile tire. 275 on the 8.5" would work if it's short time use like at the drag strip, but I wouldn't recommend it for daily driving that sees various cornering speeds as it could cause unwanted side wall movement under load. .8.5"=215mm so the 275=10.8". That will be 1.4" of sidewall bulge on each side of the wheel.I don't have nearly that much sidewall bulge with the 285/50 on my 10" wheel and that looks like enough.

275 is way to wide for sure. I run 275/40's on my 9" wide wheels and they have some overlap even still.

I think the largest to run on the 8.5 wheels would be 255 or 265 and 265 would be pushing it still.

I've got 255s on my front and they fit easily. 265s should fit fine and 275s should fit but will probably wear quicker.

What about the 255/45/18 goodyear f1 on the GT-500. How is the traction and wear on them? Can anybody recomend a back tire that will fit and hook halfway decent? Pics? Thanks for your help.

Not the Goodyear, but here is the 255/45-18 Nitto 555NT on 8.5" wheel.
