Are you on stock wheels? Shoving a wider tire on a stock width wheel won't do much to fill out the fenderwells, and can actually compromise your handling if you go too wide.

You can put a 275 width tire on a stock wheel, but that is pushing it. It will bulge a little and may not get a full contact pattern with the road.

Your best bet is getting a wider rear wheel and stepping up tire size accordingly, but I realize that's easier said than done.

What style wheel are they? All factory GT style wheels were 8" wide to my knowledge.

A 275 width tire is just right for a 9" wheel. It's hard to really fill out the rear fenderwells in a 99-04 without going 10.5" rear wheel or using spacers, unfortunately.
