What size tires for Pony wheels?

I picked up a set of 5 lug 16X8" Pony wheels and need tires for them. I see a lot of cars with Ponies looking like they have a lot of sidewall which I don't really like the looks of. I want to run 245/50R16 tires for the added width but I wonder if the sidewalls would look too talk for me. What size tires is everyone running on Pony wheels, is anyone using 225/50R16's? If anyone has pics that would help...

Here is a pic of mine with 245-50-16. Hope this helps.

Are you planning to run staggered tire sizes or the same size all around? Those wheels being 1-inch wider than Fox Pony wheels I think 225/50's might be too small. I'm running 225/50's up front on 7" ponies and they line up right there at the edge of the wheel lip. I guess it all depends on the look you're going for but I think 235's or better yet, 245/45's would be the best bet. With the wider wheel the 245/50's should show less sidewall, compared to 7" Ponies.

Not sure yet on if I want to go staggered or the same size all around... if I ran the 245's on the back which aspect ratio would look better with 225's up front?

235/45R16's or 245/45R16's would be cool but nobody makes them... so both your cars have the 225/50R16's? BTW which springs & isolators are you running on the gray car?

Stock tire size is 225/55/16 on a 16x7 wheel. That gives you an OD of 25.7"

8" wide wheels SHOULD have a 245 tire on it. You could run a 255 if you wanted. 235's will fit too. 225's might be too narrow.

Proper tire sizes to maintain a OD of 25.7" are

225/55/16 25.7"
235/50/16 25.3"
245/50/16 25.6"
255/50/16 26.0"

I'd do 245/50/16's all around and call it a day.

x2

245/50 and stock 225/55 will have the same height sidewall, thats why you drop the aspect ratio when going wider to maintain the same overall height

I would vote for a 245/45/16. I had 225/50/16 on my old ponys and I like the look of the 50 vs the 55 sidewall.

??

a 225/55/16 and a 245/50/16 will have the same height sidewall, but the 245 will bulge slightly because it is a wider tire on the same size rim.

tire size 101, just because i feel like being a know-it-all...

225=Tire Width in Millimeters
55=Aspect Ratio (% of tread width that makes up the sidewall...55% of the tread is the height of the sidewall)
16=rim size

a 225 tire with a 55 aspect ratio means that 55% of the tread is how high the sidewall is. a 245 tire with a 50 aspect ratio means that only 50% is sidewall.

55% of 225 = 123.75
50% of 245 = 122.50

the 245/45/16 however has a 110.25mm sidewall, which is way too small

there is a 1.25mm difference in sidewall height...not enough to make any difference visually or on your speedo

Correct, a 55 series sidewall is not always the same height from tire to tire. It's a percentage of the tires width.

A 225/55/16 and a 245/50/16 have the SAME hight sidewall.

I am running a 255/50 on my stock ponys. Looks good when at full psi (they are BFG drag radials). The squat and hook great when lowered to about 18psi for the track. I normally run about 25 on the street with them and can't complain.

I understand the sidewall height is a percentage of the tread width. He said that he had a 16x8 pony wheel which would deem the 245mm width. My old pony wheels are 16x7 which the 225 came from. I also liked the shorter sidewall personally. The sidewall on my 16x7 225/50/16s are 112.50mm. A 245/45/16 size tire will have a sidewall of 110.25 since he has the 8 inch wide wheels. That was my justification to not suggest a 50 series tire. If I have some time tomorrow I will snap off a couple pics since I still have the ponys on the front for now.
