What the hell?!

Alright, tonight I went out with my car.. Was running decent and I was running atleast 95 octane in it [if that matters].

Anyway, I pull up next to a sebring [hardtop] at a stop light and didn't really know if he wanted to race, but I put my one foot on the brake and my other I used to rev the RPMs up to about 1000RPMs then when the light turned green I jumped my foot off the brake and put my left foot about 3/5ths down on the gas.. I had him off the line by about a car length then he caught up and I slammed the gas down to the floor. He ended up passing me and then just flew by. :bang:

I don't race that much, but I'd like to be able to beat something. Is it my driving? Did I screw up on the launch? Is there a better way do launch? Should have I floored it all the way? Is my car just that slow?!

Also, I know I need to replace my fuel filter, but I highly doubt it can be that big of a problem.

Someone please help, it's kinda embarressing. :fuss:

Well, I don't see how you can complain about losing to a Sebring if you weren't even @ WOT. Try that next time (not to condone street racing AT ALL) & see if that happens again. I would certainly hope not. Have you modded it any?

EDIT: I just seen your mods ( I guess they're for the GT). Get on it next time. If it doesn't suit your taste, just add horsepower 'til the recipe hits the spot, lol. If you're like me, the $$ ingredient will make you regurgitate, though. I see you have the gears & N2O kit to put in/on. That should pep it up a little.

well, unless you have a significant amount of power more than the other car, its harder to beat the momentum.. meaning, when you let off the throttle.. he just kept going, then you tried to match his momentum but being that you were probably close to the same weight and power.. it didnt happen

I am highly worried about putting the nitrous in my car due to the fact that I have 126,000 miles on the engine and I have a feeling that the kid that had the car before me wasn't so kind to it. I'm very scared of blowing the engine [Sad to say.]. I also just had a new tranny put in about 1300 miles ago.

WTF a sebring

why did you put your left foot on the gas???

Typo. Should have been right foot.

I was running 95 octane because I thought it would create a bigger explosion in the combustion chambers and make the car a little faster. Police run 103 octane in their cars.

As for running the nitrous, I'm still scared a little.. If I blow up my engine my parents would kill me. I am planning on buying a 302 and rebuilding it over the winter then maybe running nitrous.

Almost forgot,
Is there a better way for me to launch my car? It's an automatic.

The higher the octane, the LESS volatile it is, meaning it's not gonna burn as efficiently as lower octane. The only reason people run higher octanes is to reduce detonation.

Where did you hear that police run 103?

The higher the octane, the less power you will make. Plain and simple. Bumping the timing up and putting in 93 will balance themselves out and create no more power.

Put some 87 in that car and try it again.

My friends dad was a state trooper and they had a pump right outside the station. He said it was clearly stated with a yellow sticker that it was no less than 103 octane.

Maybe it was that area. I know here in texas I have never heard of cops running 103 in a basic police cruser. And if they did then maybe thier cars were set up for the higher octane.

But just becuase a gas has a higher octane dosent mean it's better. It's all about what the car needs for the pest performance with out detaniotion ect.

nope theres no real better way to launch an auto, just give it enough rpms while holding the brake that you dont spin them off the line, then just give it as much gas as you can without breaking traction til its to the floor... that having been said, dont do it on the streets cuz the cops love to see you race and theres a million illegal things with what you're doing that they can bust you for, and without sounding like your mother, its not worth it, plus if you get a ticket for that or your car gets seized, i think your parents are gonna be a little more mad than if you blow the motor and have to put a jankyard motor in...

you know what, run whatever gas you want.i have never heard of higher octane hurting the performance.wtf is that?when you go to the track you dont put cheap gas in it.and i thought the factory timing was 10 degrees, why would he want to back it off to 6-8 degrees just to run 87 octane?makes no sense to me.but i do question your desire to race a sebring?i mean its a sebring for gods sake.

so a sebring has similar power to a mustang? that's a surprise
