My C-4 trans has been at the tranny shop for 3 weeks today. I called the guy Friday to check on its progress, he replied he hadn`t got to it yet, and also had an employee going on vacation this week (sounds like he is buying more time to me.....) He told me when I dropped it off that it would be done in 3 weeks, which put me right on schedule for the stage I was in at the time. At this moment the only thing standing between me and installing the motor is the tranny....

I got to Advance Auto Parts yesterday, for about $100 more I can get a bulletproof brand c-4 by the end of the week, which also has a 3 year 36k warrenty with it.

I`ll admit I`m getting a little anxious to get this thing rolling, I`ve spent about 8k so far and about 2 months work getting the car ready for this, what would yall do?

I say go with the tranny from advance...if something happens to it, you would be out another week or so...if something happens to the tranny you are getting rebuilt who knows how long you may be out, he already told you three weeks and has not started so I would go with advance...

3 year warrenty sounds good to me. for $100 more I would think the insurance would be worth it. I dont know the quality of that brand of C-4, but if it works well I would think it would be worth it. Unless the shop will warranty its work for the same period of time?

Yea it just makes me mad

When these guys tell you one thing and give ya another. I called Advance while ago and made sure they can stick on the price and what comes with the tranny (bellhousing) blah blah. Soon as I hear back, this tranny guy may be giving me my stuff back.

If a shop cant start a job for 3 weeks, then they should be up front about it-

no excuses- if they are not organized enough to know when they take a job that they cant get started on it within a few days- then they are not the type of shop I want to deal with-

I waited one time for a disorgainized shop like this and my car came back with different parts then what I had asked for because the guy lost my paperwork and thought I wanted something I didnt-

Me and Advance have a little history. I got hosed on a steering Gear box I bought there. The first one crapped out and they replaced it. I went ahead and replaced the whole power steering system, installed the second gear box acourding to instructions, same as the first. It went down within 3 months. I thought maybe it was just the power steering pump, because it stopped turning, took it off and back to them. The manager basically wouldn't order me a replacement. I was pissed, went to autozone got a new pump, flushed the lines. It was the gearbox that was dead, maybe it was what killed that new pump.

This stuff is not just advance though. I've learned for a major component like that it's better to find a reputable shop than buy it from the autoparts store.

Bought a C4 tranny from AutoZone, and had a lot of fun putting it in the car, laying in the dirt, with it raining. My roommate got maybe 100 feet before all forward gears died.

Pulled that tranny out and it was Münchhausen inside. shredded metal everywhere. The guys at the autozone, who I'd been buying parts from for years hooked me up with a second tranny. We put it in and it worked fine for at least 4 months. I moved up here to Lubbock, which sucks BTW, and shortly after I lost 3rd gear. I went to the Autozone here and they were basically no help. The warranty falls to their supplier, so I had to deal directly with them. That was a real pain, they wouldn't replace the second tranny since it was a replacement for the first.

Great. So, I bought a tremec 3550. I wanted overdrive anyway.

I`m going a stall torque anyway

So no problem there.

This guy at advance seems pretty cool to me, he pretty much gave one of my buddys a Griffin radiator because of a botched order that kept his project car down for about 2 weeks. The store is new and the manager said they are trying to get a good rep quick.

My prediction in 3-4 months..."tremec 3550's suck, mine crapped out on me". :rlaugh: You have some tough luck man.

You know, I hear lots of people say that rebuilding/upgrading automatics is easy. I guess you could try it yourself. I'm usually broke and EXTREMELY distrusting of mechanics, so that's what I would do.

My old C4 is sitting in the weeds beside the garage. Maybe I should rebuild it just for kicks.

I threw my C4 away when I switched over to the T5. Now I kind of wish I had mine just to play with it. I also have a problem with paying another man to tinker with my manifolds and other what nots. Can you really trust them ?

Everyone I know says rebulding a C4 isn't all THAT hard so you provably should give it a shot. Just get yerself a new torque converter to go along with it and make sure to flush the cooler lines.

65fastbackresto can try it, but I'm in no hurry. My C4 is sitting in the weeds because a Toploader took its place in the car. :D Heck, my '68 factory service manual has a nice detailed rebuild section, but I never thought to look at it.

Update for yall

Called Turner Trans yesterday, asked the guy when he was gonna finish the transmision. He replied he was gonna start on it Friday, I replied, so your starting it on Friday, when are you gonna finish it? He said, I THINK it`ll be done late next week, but I have an employess going on vacation.....

Long story short, told him if he couldn`t be done by friday, dont even bother, he told me come pick it up, told him it would be my pleasure.

Called Advance Auto, will have one in 2 weeks for same amount of money WITH a warrenty.
