Hey guys, I ran the vin on my Mustang and it turns out it came out of the factory with the 351 4v, 266hp. Was this a rare motor or something? Anyways, somewhere along the line it was changed to a 302 :notnice:, but in trying to figure out the horsepower(since a 302 changed from year to year) how would I be able to tell what year 302 was swapped in? Any serial numbers on the block or something? I doubt they woudl have swapped in a 73 302, but anything is possible. thanks

too bad it didn't have the original motor in it. that would have been the '72 HO which was a lower compression boss 351 .

so even tho its a 73 it had the 72 HO? The Vin had the "Q" designation, and a little research told me it was a 351 4v. How much horsepower did it have if it was the 72? Damn, this car has really been abused too, it was once a standard at some point, and someone converted it to automatic without removing the clutch linkage :fuss: Anyways, so pull the starter and its behind there? once i get the engine vin, where do i go?

There's no way to accurately tell the horsepower of the 302 you have now. All you can do is guess. The casting #'s ( this is what krash was referring to) will tell you what block you have, and ditto for the heads ( but with the heads, you'll have to remove the intake to see the casting #) There's no telling from what you've descibed so far as to even if that 302 is as it was when it left Ford. So you could have anywhere from 120 hp to 400hp from what you've described.
