I am trying to figure out what upgrade to do next! I have a list of what I am thinking and one of what I have done. Whats the best move here guys?

Already Installed
3.73 FRPP
Pro 5.0 Short Throw
MM Adj Quadrant Kit
Underdrive Pullies
MSD 6AL (Plugs, wires, coil)
Mac CIA
70MM Cobra MAF
Flowmasters (Not sure what series they came on it)

Upgrades
Long Tube Headers, off road x pipe? This is what I thought for next.
Timing advance (Does it really help)
Cobra Intake
1.7 Roller Rockers
Heads/Cam/Intake?
Any know if the custom chips are worth it? They say they really increase throttle response? ANyone used one with my amount of Mods?
Ideas?

Next thing I would do is disconnect that 6AL, put it behind your back tire and back over it. Save yourself

H/C/I is the best choice hands down

Why would I not want to run the MSD? I noticed the engine run better with it, better idle improved throttle response, better mpg

The odds are that the MSD (May Suddenly Die) will do just that and leave you stranded somewhere at the worst possible time.

Long tube headers aren't worth the problems with fit and ground clearance on a street car. Some Ford Racing Stainless steel shorties are your best bet for quality, fit and performance.

The Ford Explorer cast GT40 intake from a 95-97 Explorer is a best choice item. It will have all the emissions ports in the correct place. I got mine off a 96 Explorer with the 19# injectors and 65 MM throttle body for $250. The 19 # injectors have an orange plastic body and an improved spray pattern.

The 70 MM cobra MAF/Sensor only matches the Cobra X3Z which is internally calibrated for 24 lb injectors.
The MAF body and sensor are designed to match each other. Therefore you can't swap sensors between different part number MAF bodies and maintain proper calibration. The assembly is designed to match the computer’s internal program, and swapping a different MAF can upset the computer's calibration. In other words, your Cobra MAF won't match the calibration of your 5.0 Mustang computer.

The only other MAF that is a one for one swap for a 93 and earlier 5.0 Mustang is the 94-95 Mustang MAF.

94-95 Mustang GT MAF - $40-$100. It is 70 MM instead of the stock 55 MM on regular stangs built prior to 94. It uses a slip on duct on the side that goes to the throttle body and a 4 bolt flange on the other. You need a flange adapter to fit the stock slip on air ducting that goes to the air box. Wiring plugs right in with no changes. *1 *2

*1.) Metal flange adapter Kurtz Kustomz Motorsports, Inc. KKM Buy the TR70 for $44.95. Or spend some time on eBay looking for one that may fit.

*2.) MAF & sensor interchange
The 94-95 Mustang 5.0 MAF & sensor is also found on:
1995-94 Mustang 3.8L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Crown Victoria 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1995-94 Mustang, Mustang Cobra 5.0L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Town Car 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Grand Marquis 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
Evidently the –A1A, -A2A, AA, etc. on the end of the part number is a minor variant that did not change the operating specs. You should be able to ignore it and have everything work good.


The next positive thing to do is to buy a timing light (about $45) and set the timing at 14 degrees.

jrichker you always have great posts thanks again. I will advance the timing and run 93 I am guessing. Wouldn't I get a check engine or a code if the MAF was wrong? I have no codes. I got it off ebay from someone who said it was for 19 injectors and i noticed a increase and no driveability issues. So changeing the intake is sugguested over opening up the exhast?

Also mine is a street car but not a daily driver. Has 73K miles on it. I got it from a old man and just had the clutch changed 4K miles ago!

You won't get a code for the MAF, but the mixture may not be correct. That maf is matched to be used with 24# injectors and the cobra EEC. Pull it off and replace it with a 94-95 gt 70mm maf with adapter. It is a direct swap with the stock 55mm maf.

Skip the chip. Only chips worth their salt are custom dyno tune chips.

For next mods, a nice explorer intake with the 65mm throttle body is a good mod. You can pick up the intake complete with injectors and throttle body for $75-100 these days. Identical to cobra intake virtually...and not made in China.

Can't go wrong with exhaust mods.

If you don't mind filling woth 93 octane, you can bump your timing a tad. 12-14 degrees is typical when using 91+ octane. Each car is different though.

Heads/cam....all depends pm budget. A good cheap budget build uses gt40p heads, a stock 85-88 speed density cam with 1.7 rr's and e explorer intake. Under $500 and you'll be about 300-325 crank horsepower with supporting mods.

Timing is free and easy, and you will notice an improvement (though it typically requires premium gas). You'll notice some improvement with the headers, exhaust, rockers, or intake, but a huge improvement with the heads/cam/intake combo. At some point along the way you'll need a bigger throttle body. The rockers will cost you a mile or so per gallon, and aluminum heads will gain you a mile or so per gallon, or they did for me. I would not spend the money on a chip for an 89 5.0.

I called a local junk yard they had a '98 explorer that he would sell me the entire intake and heads for 300. In the above it said 94-97 and I searched the other posts and does the '98 have a issue with EGR bolting on? Let me know and I will keep looking or if this is what I should get for a semi budget build. I will have it all ported and polished.

Don't neglect the suspension. After all it is a 22 year old car. Check out www.uprproducts.com

And don't worry about the MSD. I'm sure it'll be fine. You hear complaints online, but the fast guys run them, whether it's NASCAR, NHRA, NMCA, NMRA, or whatever.

The msd is not a issue. Is the 98 explorer heads and intake worth getting or do they have yet issues

late-97 intake does NOT have EGR.

96 and early 97 do have the EGR.

Ok, thanks guys I think I am going find a set of GT40 Heads and Intake start my build from there. Look into getting them ported and polished also, Thanks again guys
