wheel stud / lug nut question

Hi guys. Got my chrome bullitt's & tires setup today. After putting them all on, I realized I had the directional tires going the wrong way. I removed the front ones, swapped them around, and when I got to the back ones, I found that one of my lug nuts broke loose, then wouldn't turn anymore.. would tighten a little again, but had a point where it stopped. I've seen this before, it's stripped. The lug nut itself is sort of at an angle due to this.

Anyway, having had this problem on other cars, I just put the rears back on fully and left it for now, not wanting to break the wheel stud. It's those chrome locking lugnuts from MT. Hopefully they'll sell me just one to replace the stripped one.

My plan is to take it to our auto shop on base here and use an impact wrench to shock it off. My question is, have any of you had luck using this method versus just using a prybar pushing as hard as you can to get it off?

Secondly, when you're replacing a wheel stud on these things (on the rear) can you just hammer the crap out of it to get it out, then press it back on with a lugnut and some washers like on the older vehicles? I don't have ABS so I should have plenty of clearance behind the studs (I think.)

I would not try using a pry bar because I think you'd run the risk of bending the stud. Are you sure the nut itself is strippped? Or is it possible that you've crossthreaded the nut and the stud?

Yeah sorry I meant crossthreaded, not stripped. I'm not sure which is crossthreaded, the stud or the nut.. so I plan to just replace the stud and the nut. :)

I just changed the studs on my car... The old ones come out quite easily with a hammer. Yes just hammer the crap out!
But to put new ones, I tried with washers and nuts, and as much torque I could give... they would not go in! I even damaged one thread and broke the stud...
Then I borrowed the impact gun from my neighbour and that did the trick, after grinding them a little so they're not to tight.

no ABS on a 2004 GT?

ABS/TC was an option, and I figured since I've hated every other ABS car I've driven and had to drive in rain or snow, and since everyone disables traction control anyway, why bother paying extra for it?

yeah just the same as old cars. just hammer out and then use the lug nuts and washers approach. if its an open ended lug turn it backwards so you use the flat side not the tapered side. good luck buddy

just break the stud if you have to. do what ever you have to to get the lug off.

pound out the old one and put the new on it. should take no more than 5min if you don't have abs. if you had abs it would be more like a 1 hour just casue would have to pull the axle and the tone ring. IT is funny the studs will almost come out around the tone ring but not quite.
