when it comes to Automatics...

Is it better to use a 4.10s or 3.73s? My friends and i were talking about this over the weekend as i am planing to do a bigger rear gear this spring and i was unsure what to go with. I thought i remembered that with autos your better off to go 4.10 but friends though that with sticks your better to go with a 4.10.

Either way i am putting ina rear gear but was just curious if one suits me better than the other.

Also are there any downsides to rear gears? Anyone have or hear of anyhting bad happening afterwards? Does anything need to be beefed up to compensate for teh gear?

One thing alot of people say they run out of gear with 4.10s at the track. Also if you ever get a S/C 4.10s will be a little much.

If i get the cash to supercharge the car i'll spend the extra money to put in a smaller gear.

. Good choice. I love my 4.10s even though mine is 5spd

I had 4.10s in my car until the middle of last year. There awesome for and auto even if you get a blower, well a centri blower at least. Until you really start making some serious power and trapping 115-120 you don’t have to worry about running out of gear.

The only way I would say to avoid them is if you do a lot of driving at 70-75mph that is the only place they will hurt you.

I would recommend 4.10s 100%.

I wouldn't think it would hurt that much. I mean with 3.73s I'm just a tick under 3k at 80mph. I'm guessing 4.10s will add another 200rpms? I get around 230 miles out of a tank and that’s half highway and half around town with lots of WOT runs. I wouldn't think 4.10s would be that much of a difference in gas mileage. One thing that is a must is getting a transmission cooler.

Crusing at 3k at 75 isn't exactly a fun trip. LOL My exhaust is screaming and I wouldn't think its real good on the motor either.

See now that raises a question in my mind because i do tend to do some 75 mph highway driving from time to time. Is it just bad because of gas milage or is it bad engine wise?

If i see 200 miles on a tank with my car its a lot. I ususally only see around 160 to 170.

Your gas mileage shouldn't change at all. Mine has not with my 4.10s. On the highway you will be at higher RPMs which will cause your exhaust to be louder so it depends if you want to hear your exhaust at high RPMs or not.

I wouldn't say it’s bad on the engine. At 80mph at around 3,100rpm you still have 3,150 more RPMs to get to the rev limiter. The only issue you will have is that your exhaust will be louder. Getting 160-170 miles to a tank is very low; you should be around 210-240.

If you’re not driving it daily I don't think you’d have a problem. I only hit those speeds when I was going to and from the tracks (1-2 times a month) so it didn't bother me that much. Now if I was commuting every day then I think Id go with 3.73s.

Just because your not hitting the rev limiter doesn’t mean its ok to do. I’m not saying its bad for sure but I can’t imagine cruising at 3k+ for a long period of time is good thing to do to motor.

There shouldnt be much difference in mileage but the drone of a freeflowing exhaust at 3k will numb you to the core. I swear my eyes vibrate when I do around a hundred and at 3k the exhaust note humm is defening.

I agree, I cruise at 75-80 and it is very loud, gets annoying but that’s the speed most people go at around here on the highway. Cruising at 70 is perfect; If I had 4.10s 70 would be kind of annoying. One thing that helps is to crack the window open a little then the sound isn't as bad.

I have 4.10's in my auto. The gears are awesome. As far as highway drone goes, I have a drone cruising at 60-65 above that it's gone! and Quiter... as far as MPG goes I get around 20 just highway cruising at 70-75 and 17-18 city/hwy.
Automatics have a lower top gear of .70 compared to the sticks .68 so that does make a little difference in hwy cruising rpm.

If your going to get a blower in the future go with 3.73's and save yourself the $$

4.10's in my auto, 65mph=2500rpm...i have no exhaust drone, must be the longtube headers....when i had stock manifolds it was unbearable.
