Where to put MSD 6a?

I did a search but either my search skill stink or there isn't a good thread out there. Way back when (1990) I installed an MSD 6a unit and mounted it where the OEM air box was and replaced the box with a K&N cone. Older and wiser I am going to bin the cone filter and go back to the OEM air box. Now I have to find a place for the MSD. Where are you guys mounting these things? Inside the car maybe? Pics of your install would be great! Thanks in advance!

No pics, but I've got my 6al on a bracket I made which places it inside the fender just behind the battery. The inner fender liner keeps it dry (that, and the fact my car doesn't see rain, lol) and it places the unit in a good location for wiring.

Also what i'm sure Alan meant to mention and almost goes without saying is mount it away from heat. Also mounting it right side up will keep the water out the best because the box is not sealed well from the bottom. I'd concur though that his location is good.

Thanks!

So there is no one spot everyone puts these things? My car won't be driven in the rain if I can help it, but living in New England you can never predict the weather. I would bet the inner fender wouldn't be a great spot for me.

I put mine within my driver side inner fender as well, but the inner fender protects it from any of natures crap. Sucks to have to get back to it as you have to remove the inner fender, but its protected. There is a little lip up there and I just utilized my riveting gun. Works like a charm!

I may be getting one cuz when I replaced my broken door handles I used bolts but for a more permanent job I should have used rivets. Now that the thing looks like it's going to be good for more than just one thing i'll look into investing in one. :D

One thing you need to remember is that the rivets for the door handle that are required are fairly large. You would probably want 2 rivet guns then. One smaller and one larger for diff kinds of jobs...

Okay cool deal. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction brudda. I think i'll get the larger one and do up the door handles first. Shouldn't get any rain for a while so the MSD should be safe where it is for a bit. :D

Edit: BTW Where might I pick up one of these guns cheap?? Thanks.

Not a problem! I borrow my larger one from the Ford dealership itself when I did the handles, but you can pick one of these up from even autozone or sears.. Any hardware or parts stores, I have seen em at both...:nice:

I think the larger ones in our shop came from Sears, maybe even 50Resto (if they even sell them, that's where the new handle kit came from).

For smaller rivets, I've got a pneumatic rivet gun, which has completely spoiled me.

Alright i'll hit up auto zone and sears tomorrow between classes. Between the two i'm bound to come home with a rivet gun. Hope this is helping you too Ducati. I've kind of inadvertantly jacked your thread, sorry lol. Never used one before but it can't be rocket science. Thanks again folks.

Edit: BTW I dunno how much 50resto charges for handles but I got mine of a 70's or 80's ford station wagon at the junkyard. Was stoked cuz they're identical to ours but they're made of metal and are chromed and got em for 5 bones. Looks slick. :D

Nice find. I dunno how much they were either, it was a while ago when my friend put him on his notch. My stock ones are still in great condition, but at least the rivet gun is now in the tool box if they ever get tired. :D

I can never have enough tools. Probably half of the ones i've bought have never been used. I'd rather stock up beforehand than have to go out to the parts store in the middle of a mod. I love my wife. I ask her to go get me a screwdriver and a roll of electrical tape she comes back with 6 bags of tools and a 5.0 magazine. DAMN I love her. Hehehe.

You can tell her that my wifes email addie is .......

No seriously, does she offer seminars???

Hahaha she's a one-off custom item. It does have its drawbacks though. Like when you're shopping for stuff other than car parts lol. We go to wal mart I have to stay right there with her or the cart will fill up quick! And she doesn't look at the prices of stuff. Me, i'm the opposite, when it comes to non-car stuff i'm a cheapskate. I end up putting half the crap from her cart back on shelves on the way to the checkout lol. Go to the grocery store for a loaf of bread and end up having to put groceries in the back seat cuz she filled the hatch lol. Oh well, she works and makes more than I do so I can't complain. I ask her to wake me up in the morning(I don't wake up by alarm clocks) and she wakes me up with pancakes and four sandwiches made to take with me. I really don't deserve her.

Good GOD!! STOP NOW!!!! I still need to love my wife when this convo is over!!!

Lmfao I DID stop early. There's more. But then I realized not everyone can be so lucky and you gotta be happy with what you got. Hmmmm what can I say to help. Could be worse? Better than nothing? At least you have your health? Dang i'm sorry lol. Poor bastids.
