I have a low mile stock bottom end 302 with trick flow track heat upper and lower, ported e7's, 5 speed, 70mm tb, 3:73 gears. Its not a daily driver so the lumpier the better. I need to know what cam i should put in that wont make my pistons and valves hit. I have heard the B cam and the trick flow stage 1 are safe and both lope somewhat erratic? Can I fit an x cam or tf stage 2? Remember my pistons are not notched.

I'd be hesitant to go much, if any, bigger than the 2 cams you listed and it has nothing to do with whether or not you have the correct P to V clearence. The X cam and the TFS 2 like a lot of RPM (as compare to stock) and even ported E7s will have trouble taking advantage of the high RPM.

Lift of the cam doesn't really have much to do with whether or not you will have the correct P to V clearence. The cam timing determines it instead. Even with the B or Stage 1 you should check P to V with un-notched pistons.

I put a B303 in my boss's old Mustang, '89 GT 70,000 miles, factory everything. It worked out just fine. A guy I work with put a E303 in an '89 LX, but the vacuum response sucked, and the power brakes were pretty much useless when the cam lopes.

But, have the heads or block been decked at all? If you are unsure, you should check the P to V clearance.

A friend of mine had a 93gt w/ gt40p head swap and he was running an e-cam w/ 1.6 rockers, and as far as i know he had no troubles w/ p to v clearances. VRIstang is right, its always a good idea to do it right the first time. You could always takes the heads back off and swap the iron for aluminum and then check your p to v clearance w/ the new cam

How does the TFS cam sound? Why do you say the ford cams suck?

Many poeple just dont like alphabet cams and I think its generally because they are looked upon as old technology. I personally have run all the alphebet cams, some more than once and I have yet to not like one but thats not to say they are nessecarily better or worse. Any given combo might run better with one cam or the other. I generally end up with alphabet cams more because I get a good deal on them more than anything else but again, I have yet to really be dissapointed. The only exception was a B cam with a c4 auto with too tight of a stall but the same combo with a 5 speed was fine. I have run an E303 with 1.72 rockers which I believe hadas much lift as the X cam I am using now and had no problems with stock pistons but like someone said, lift isnt the only factor. I think you ould be hard pressed to have clearance issues with a B303, E303 or a stage one in anything except maybe an 86 which is a different animal all together. Any will give you that "hot rod sound" an lope nicely. I personally like the E303 over the B303 but gioven the choice would go with the stage one. My nephew is running the stage one in his 84RS with a stock shortblock, stock P heads, longtubes and 3.55's. He pulled a 13.4 on junk street tires his first time out. Car pulls pretty hard in the midrange and sounds really nice.

i think the tfs cam sounds bad ass. i have tryed running it with my 1.6 RR and the 1.7 that i just put back on it again. i like it better with the 1.7 but it chop's more with the 1.6. I never owned a ford cam but have been in cars with B cam and E cam and x cam i just did really like them. I think the tfs cam pulls better. but that is just me alote of people run the ford cams.

I have had both the E(currently) and the stage 1. The stage 1 on the same setup is lopier and had more power. I think the stage 1 will work fine with your setup. Anything more and you will probably loose power.
