Well guys as some of you may know I am building a 408 stoker. I am having a hard time picking a good set of heads. The only thing is it must have a 64cc chamber. I like the Trick flows, Edel Victory jr, and the GT-40x head. Help me out ....

I have been told AFR 185cc heads are the cats azz? I don't know much about these heads. They are a little pricey but look great. I am open to any sug.

IMO the GT-40X heads are a pile of junk even on a 302...not even in the same catagory as AFR 165s, let alone VicJR's. I'd consider AFR 205s, VicJR's, and some variations of Trickflows.

Actually, those trickflows in the classifieds look pretty tempting for a 408, but the flow numbers kinda scare me, I'd question the port job, were they chasing flow numbers and top end HP or is there some mid-range flow left? More often than not, ported-all-to-hell-and-gone heads can make for a lazy street engine because they've been set up to work at .700" lift and 7000rpm and nowhere else.

The reason AFRs put a beating on everyone else is their mid-range flow That and port velocity is what creates torque and top end HP..best of both worlds

The AFR 205's seem to be what most magizine write up go with. I do not think you can go wrong with vic jr's either.

AFR 225cc or similar cylinder head for a 408.

I like their lightweight valvetrain, compared to the competition.

I am 90% sure I am going with the AFR heads. After a night of reseach and reading I am sold. I may go with the 205cc since the car will see more track than street. I should have one strong 408 when I am done. My specs on the 408 (Scat forged bottom end, Flat top pistons, custom comp small base circle cam, notched 94 lightning block, 42lbs injectors, mass air flow, 255lph fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, edelbrock intake, hooker 351 headers......) may more parts to come

wouldn't you want the arf 225's over the 205's for a mostly track car?

The 225cc heads need lots of rpm to make power. My combo will not see any rpm over 6500. The cam profile is good for 2500-6800rpm. I am looking for gobs of tq and a healthy amount of hp. The 205cc heads are a happy medium. That gives me great power for the track and some limited steet time.

Is that cam powerband for a 302 or a 408?

Incorrect.

Only reason to choose 205's over 225's in this case is if you don't want to buy custom headers. You're building a 408, not a 289.

Just for clarification, an AFR 205 is not beneficial at all on a 289, unless you are spinning it upwards of 9-9,500+ RPM.
