I bought a 95 GTS this weekend with 138000 miles on it.It has a 5 speed tranny and shifts great. When you are accelerating up through the gears there is a whine that increases as you increase in speed. It sorta sounds like a blower The owner said not to worry, all T5 trannys have a gear whine. You only notice it in 1st thru 3rd.This is my first Mustang ever.It is actually the first one I have ever driven. The previous owner was meticulous with this car.I have a 3 ring notebook with every receipt for every accesory added to this car.I sorta like the whine, but is it cause for concern? Is this common on T5 trannies like he said?

Probably just gear whine mine did that, my 3550 does it louder. I recommend an aftermarket shifter it'll help make shifting easier.

few questions:
1. does it have an aftermarket shifter (that will "exagerate" teh noise)
2. do you have aftermarket gears (they create whine/howl noise)

well....the T5 does whine, but you shouldn't be able to hear it unless the windows up/radio off and you are listening for it, pull off the boot and see if there is a lower shift boot, he may have removed it for some reason

Lots of them do this, i wouldnt worry about it till it starts to go out. Beat on it and it shouldnt be long If its the t5 it will sound like it is coming from the trans. when the rear end whines it usually is quite evident that its coming from the rear, even if it is "throwing its voice" its clearly evident when it is the transmision. aftermarket shifters do make it worse, but the better shifting makes it worth it.

T5's do that. Mine howled very loud when I got it, it didn't last long either and went out. Lost 4th gear and it would grind going into 3rd. If its howling pretty bad wouldnt be a horrible idea to put some $$ back for a rebuild. Be prepared for it to go down the crapper soon.

1. Yes

2. Only if there not installed right. Nothing wrong w/ them they will just whine some.

Thanks guys. The whine isnt a howl, its more like engine noise coming through your radio.Sorta like a supercharger gear whine.I had a wheel bearing go bad on a Prelude. It sounds nothing like that. The radio in this GTS sucks. Not even a CD.I dont even think its a Mach 460.I like the sound of that exhaust as it goes through the gears anyway.
