I want to port my stock cobra heads. I didn't come up with much searching, so i figured i'd make a thread about it.

I plan on sending my stock intake to TMoss here soon, and putting in a mild cam.

Thanks

That is a plus with his work. He does a valvejob and checks the valves, along with a mill to make sure they are flat. you can upgrade to a better spring package at a very fair price as well.

Basicly you get what a shop would do to make sure they are cleaned up and fresh along with the port work.

check out his website http://Thumperoforangepark.com

I thought a few years ago I seen him charging $500-$800 depending on what was done...but my memory fails me sometimes

From what I hear he does some good stuff with the porting of heads...

I dont think ported gt40's will need ANYTHING close to .600 lift....IMHO .550 would be pushing it.

That said I went with comp springs that were good up to .550 but dont plan on getting near that limit.

Is their any flow numbers available?
Is 12 seconds possible on a set of AFR's + cam+ intake?

It seems, on what his website claims, the 12 second 900 dollar option, might be as good as/compared to a set of afr's.

12's are and have been done with AFR165 heads.

Thumper is one of the first who will say the ported iron heads prob. are not going to be like alum. AFR/TFS heads due to the total design of such parts (chamber, runners, valves, port size just to startwith). However, for the money spent on a combo that will be fairly well matched for under what a set of alum. heads cost that will run well...not a bad thing. I would say that the ported gt40's would be fairly close to a set of box stock AFR 165's...and with the smaller runners maybe make more trq. I just cant say they would be "AFR killers" or "100% better/just as good as AFR" style statements. I like the factory stuff for the most part and to see what can be had.

I am confident that with my setup I should be in the 12's N/A once sorted out. The parts are well done and matched...on my end the tune aspect has been throwing me along with some bugs from the whole new engine thing to work out. I am 100% happy with my combo. I dont think there are that many people running his ported gt40 heads on this side (sn95's).

There are three packages on then web page (thunper's). Which package is better?

Which package would be better from low rpm to mid rpm, and then atleast keep it consistant towards 6000 rpms. Im probably asking the wrong people, but if anyone has any knowledge with his port and polish work plz reply.

Ask him, he is really helpfull.

With working the stock heads you will probably gain most from the mid range as they will just flow better, up top they will be better too. I think a fair range would be 2,500- to 6k or so as far as power range would go. Remember the runners are still smaller in size (than alum. heads) and that will help the low end volocity of air flow. IIRC the volocity is were mid range and trq really get made. The smaller runners will prob not flow as much at the top end but more than stock (they could vary well be close to box stock 165's or TFS TW's but that would not be my call to make).

From the work done on my exh. side...I dont see how flow could be improved much more....and the intake side looks like the work was done by someone who knew what to touch and what to leave alone (not all cut up/hogged out). I would not be suprised if my exh. numbers were close to 165's if not alittle more (from the 185's exh. ports I have seen at least in person). I would love to know the numbers, but the work was top notch so in the end I am not really worried about it

I've been shooting e-mails with him regarding my gt40's, really awesome guy to deal with. I'm still undecided on what to do which is the hardest part. You won't regret getting just a port and valve job. I have seen many pictures of his work and have heard nothing but good things, so I'm trying my best to give him my business.

On a side note, "I don't provide flow numbers cause they're so misunderstood", he said. So he'd rather speak of gains between 30-50hp which I think is pretty bad ass.

But first of all, decide what you want to do, and then talk to him. I won't provide a price either, that's up to Thumper.

FWIW, if you just want to get into the 12s, sell your gt40's and buy the Thumper ported e7's.

I already had the springs from prev. shop work and the cam from when I ran the heads un-ported. I really dont know what the "level" was or if there is a diff. in work. I thought there was only a diff. package deal with diff. springs/cam choices.

Thanks guys... yes, the two heads have the same port and bowl work, the cost differance is the springs!! the only set of heads I had fail.. ( yeah, it happens) was a set pushed beyond the valetrain limits... Long over revs.. SO I strongly suggest the spring up grade!! cool?? Yes the springs are good for Hyd roller cams up to .600 lift, and yes, cams that big are way over the power of the heads... but it is better to by that up grade, than a set of heads from others ( Others: the guys on the other side of the island) that only have " .550 lift" capability's.. yes??

12s is there with the ported E7s or the Ported GT40s... and they are a lot less than a set of the alum heads, esp after you have to buy the pushrods..ect to make them work!! LOL

Have fun..

Ok. here's a cam question, I know thumper uses a stage 1 trickflow cam (TFS1) for 12's.

Nowmy car has a automatic AODE transmission. What would be a great cam, that can really get my car moving? would a TFS1 still work? what others would fully utilize the cylinder head combo for naturally aspirated engine?

And

2) What other cam would work, say, if I go with a 100 shot o Nitrous?

actually what I suggest are "Proven" performance buy guys like you and me... the TFS series and the FMS series cams are deep into the 12s ( or better) and they just happen to be the cheapest of the hyd roller cams... $350-450.00 for the same performance gains, makes me want to say... HHHMMMmmmmmm......

The AOD will work well ( working well meaning.. good power, good ide, with stock components ) E303 or the TFS1 !! gears like 373/390 and a 2200 stall.. or stock..
SOOooo.... spend the money with proven parts and combos.. dont get lost in the gatta haves.. and then finish second in a two care race... cool??
