I took delivery of my new 2011 GT convertible, MT, Brembo, etc. on December 23...and it has been in storage ever since. The winter in Quebec is not the best place for such a car.

Anyway a body of mine with a Challenger SRT8 is saying the oil catch can on the Hemi are a must, is it the same for the Mustang?

Any brand in particular? I will welcome any feedback, Thanks.

There are a couple different kinds:

2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 Billet Oil Catch Can Separator - UPR Products

2011 JLT Direct Fit Satin Oil Separator Mustang GT- Satin

I don't have one yet, but probably will get one.

I've got the black JLT. Great quality, fit is like factory as they use FoMoCo lines.

JLT Oil Separator [JLTOS] - $119.00 : JLT PERFORMANCE, Home of the JLT TRUE COLD AIR KIT

Pic of it on my car:

this is why and definately go with the JLT, it's much nicer, uses factory fittings and comes pre-assembled, takes 2 minutes to snap it on

Ok, so maybe...if you're going with a super high HP motor configuration, but for a stock motor? Why don't any OEMs put this technology in their cars, if it was such a big deal?

Sure, machined metal cans look sweet, but those few dribbles of oil are probably not going to amount to much in terms of engine robbing performance or damage.

Even on stock 5.0 engines if they are collecting just 1.5 ounces of oil every 3,000 miles, it will prevent ~50 ounces from entering the intake and combustion chamber every 100K miles.

Personally I don't want oil gumming up my intake and combustion process over time if it can be prevented with a 30 second mod.

Things like this are not included as OEM because manufacturers are only concerned about getting their product through the initial warranty period at the lowest possible production costs. The same reason OEM vehicles with turbos don't come with turbo timers to prevent oil coking on shutdown.

Washed my car today and I checked my JLT oil catch can too. Had a little more than a tablespoon of oil in it after 300 miles. From what I understand, the harder you drive your car the more oil you'll end up with in the can. Personally, I think it's well worth $119 to keep that out of the intake. Sure, it may not severely hurt the engine, but it definatley won't help it either.

Wow, $120 for something we used to put on the 4.6 SOHC engines for $20 at Home Depot and 2 hours of time!

Thanks guys,

I think i will go with the satin JLT myself. I really don't want oil gumming up the intake or combustion chamber.

I'm with you on the cost of those things. I'm wondering if they have plastic ones.

You can still make your own for $20 if that's what u want. Oil will not only gum up the throttle body, intake,etc..., but it also lowers your octane...not good if your running an aftermarket tune.

A JLT catch can was my first mod.

The JLT can with the Ford hoses is great.

My last car was an SRT8 Charger and, to make a long story short, it was sucking oil at high RPM and contaminating the intake charge. As a result the PCM was pulling timing which means I was losing power. I installed a catch can and my timing stayed rock steady (this was confirmed with data logging and not a butt dyno).

I didn't even have a second thought about putting one on the Mustang.

I kept the one from My Challenger ( which collected alot of oil ) I have it installed on my 5.0 but not hooked up yet as I to have mine in storage and only bolted it in. As soon as I take outta storage I will hook the hoses up.
