Will I get decapitated? (seatbelts)

regarding spinal compression, the problem there comes in when you have the shoulder belt mount point well below the shoulder, actually both shoulders, and the seat back colapses.

I checked mine today as it was nice enough to go for a drive in the vert today.
The third point sits about 2 inches below my left shoulder. I am pretty comfortable where it's at.

By the way brtnstrns what kinda wheels are on your ride ?

they were the wheels that were on the car when i bought it...before i restored everything. But i believe they're centerline "scorpions".

The owner’s manual for my DD a Subaru Impreza states not to adjust the shoulder belt below the top of the shoulder as serious spinal injury may result.

Call me crazy but I won't use 3-pt seat belts because it would clash with my classic interior. But if I had a modern (restomod) interior I'd do it in a heartbeat. I gave a young Russian couple a ride today. The woman had never in her life ridden in a old car before and she said she was terrified riding in car without shoulder straps and without an airbag.
BTW, anyone installed an airbag in a classic yet? :D

I'm just going to stick with the lap belt when I finish my car. If it is your time then it's your time. Someone will porbably always say "If only he/she had an air bag in that old car or a better seat belt."

Then again just install a roll cage and a harness!

i plan on eventually installing a shelby style rollbar in mine and will use the shelby style 4 point belts as well. i hate shoulder belts for reasons i posted in the original thread and also because i've had surgery on my neck and left shoulder and i'm very uncomfortable wearing anything on my neck now i won't even wear any kind of necklace anymore and i have some pretty cool ones, i've got a leather one with an antique arrowhead and another with a sharks tooth and some other pretty cool ones that just sit in a drawer now. so for me it's ether 4 points or lap belts, even the 4 points night bother me a little going across my shoulder but at least they won't come anywhere near my neck

Well, the lap belt will ensure you get new dental work from eating the hard plastic steering wheel. I personally would consider a 3pt mandatory for a daily-driver classic.

Friend of mine was riding in a buddys 68 coupe when they rear-ended a car at ~35 mph (IIRC). My friend, who was in the passenger seat (no belt) slid off into the footwell, no injury. Driver (lap belt) had his face rearranged by the stock steering wheel to the tune of 3 surgeries.

Not that Im saying NO seatbelt is correct, it is not. But sometimes I wonder if the lap- belt- only is really only there to line your phiz up for maximum impact on the wheel :notnice:

well, i rear ended a friend of mine in my old 73 galaxie 500 wearing only the lap belt doing about 30-35 and had no injuries whatsoever, he got whiplash from it though. talk about feeling like a stupid F**k and lower than dirt, i still feel that way even thinking about it.
