hey all

After a long week working on swapping GT40Ps and an explorer intake on my car, i tried starting it up tonight.

The build is: GT40Ps, cobra 1.7 RRs, trick flow springs, trick flow timing chain set at OEM cam timing, explorer intake, 70mm TB and a C&L 73mm MAM. Stock bottom. Swap done with engine in car.

It has fuel. Ive gone down the cranks but no start checklist from jrichker and have a few ideas, but im still at a loss.

Its throwing codes 21, 23, and 24.

Please help!

heres more info.

i think its exploding gas in the exhaust. i had the midpipe slightly off the header collector at first and was very alarmed to see flames shooting out of the gap. i realigned the exhaust but it still wont start.

i thought i might have had the dizzy 180 out so i flipped that around and it still sounds like its exploding gas in the exhaust.

i havent checked that i have spark but im assuming i do because im exploding gas in the exhaust. Im also assuming i have fuel because my garage stinks of it while trying to start it up.

so...

6.) Spark & fuel pressure OK.
A.) Failed IAB or improperly set base idle (no airflow to start engine). Press the throttle ¼ way down and try to start the car. See the "Surging Idle Checklist for help with all your idle/stall problems.
B.) Failed computer (not very likely)
C.) Engine ignition or cam timing off: only likely if the engine has been worked on recently).
D.) Firing order off: HO & 351 use a different firing order from the non HO engines.
HO & 351W 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Non HO 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
E.) No start when hot - Press the throttle to the floor & try starting it if you get this far. If it starts, replace the ECT.
F. ) Engine that has had the heads off or valves adjusted. Do a compression test to make sure the valves are not adjusted too tight. You should have a minimum of 90 PSI on a cold engine.

A Compression check sounds interesting but i havent figured out how to get all of the plugs out since im not running P specific headers.

I was super careful with my cam timing. Im pretty sure its OEM or damn close.

I think its ignition timing but im confused because flipping it 180 made no difference. I would think that one way would start right up and another way wouldnt start at all. Both ways seem to be exploding gas in the exhaust.

Assumptions allow simple things to get overlooked and chew up lots of extra time.

That said, are you sure the dizzy was stabbed on the compression stroke and that it's in time?

Make sure you have spark and injector pulse. Use a Noid light to check for presence of the injector pulse. The presence of spark and 12 volts on the red injector wire with no injector pulse suggests TPS problems if the TPS is connected.

The code 23 (TPS too high) can shut down the injectors. Disconnect the TPS sensor and try to start the engine.
