wooden intake spacer! good idea!

I understand what your saying about being different but like said before, if you understand the properties of wood, you will see why this will not work. It may be fun, but honestly put your creativity to something better, its not worth the possible damage. When the wood breaks and goes into your brand new freash engine I dont think you will be saying oh well atleast I tried something for myself.

I also find it kinda funny how the thread name is just flat out, WOODEN INTAKE SPACER GREAT IDEA!, not like "will this work?"

what if i were to coat the wooden spacer with some fiberglas resin or something. To where the wood would never be exposed to anything...

i mean we build houses with wood, and they stand for YEARS, if wood is so bad lets build all our houses with aluminum or cast iron.... i dont see how a wooden intake spacer would be too far off the spectrum, it will be exposed to alot, but so is a wooden house and it gets alot more abuse.

i would rather try it, bc obviosly it hasnt been tried enough and documented the results on it.
Umm, wood + gasoline vapors= termites
The vapors alone will eat away at the wood no matter what you soak it with. Want something cheap and homeade, try high temp PVC sheets. Maybe some high temp lexan.

Again...i'm gonna jump in here and remind everyone about wooden carb spacers. Have none of you really ever seen one? I've seen 7 second alcohol cars with F'in wood spacers....and i'm not even joking. Hello guys....how long were boats made of wood? It's not like gasoline just rots the $hit out of wood and that's that. Like i said you need a layered plywood similar to what skateboards are made from, and you can't half ass it. Again, i wouldn't run boost with one but i don't see any reason it wouldn't work. It may not last forever but it can be done.

You guys need to stop busting balls and be supportive even if you think it's stupid. You can give advice but some of you are being dicks. If the guy fails, he'll learn a lesson, which is more than some of you will ever get sitting there typing insults on a keyboard.

nitrous backfire, water sitting on it, the heat would distort it. alcohol cars are usually ripped down after like every race for christ sake. so you can't compare an alcohol car to a street driven car that sees the elements and many heat cycles.

Far from it, check out this December 2005 CarCraft article, pg. 34...

"The Wooden carb spacer helps to dissipate heat, making the bowls on the twin 1,350-cfm Bo Laws Dominators 25 degrees cooler than the surface of the intake runners."

Here is his website if you think the use of wood is a joke...

I'm not trying to derail him or anything. I'm just putting my two cents in. Isn't that why you would post a thread anyways!

Look, I have a idea. Take the wood, make the spacer, use it as a mold and mass produce some poly/fiberglass spacers to sell on ebay.

I get 10% of the profits for the idea:D

That looks like laminated plywood on a race engine. Thats a great comparison for the 1" spacer made of cheap wood that foxfan was thinkin about making.

See that was the point i was trying to make, you can't just run to the lumber yard and pick up some wood and start cutting, you need high quality wood. And i'm tell you people...heat cycles don't mean $hit, it's not like the engine gets THAT hot. As for the nitrous backfire, that can blow out aluminum just as easily as wood so once that happens it doesn't matter, that's why you don't half ass your tune.

Oh man, I want to see the follow up thread to this one!
:stupid:

You spent all that time doing an engine swap, and now your want to put a part out of wood on the intake???

SO anyway how is your Port job going.........

i put the porting deal on hold, i still have them laying around. But i doubt they will be used for anything now. I had to use two of the valves from the heads bc the thumpers i got had 2 bent valves. So i am two valves short. Those heads were an expierence and were great practice. I have the feel for it and when i go to port something again i wont be totally new to it.

and i never said what kind of wood i would use. My grandpa is a great carpenter and has lots of wook, and good wood.
