Posting this for a friend who has a 88 gt vert bone stock the motor id dead (bad rod knock) time for a rebuild. What i know about the ford 5.0 is ..not much lol . He wants to go fast. The budget for the motor is about 5,000 .Any suggestions? He still wants it to be reliable enough to drive often but not as a dd. should he ditch the fuel injection and go with a carb or keep it?comp. ratio? i know the 5.o is a stout little motor but what type of comp ratio v.s spray? keep in mind this is a speed density car and not mass air so if he keeps the f.i. that will have to be changed. with his budget how would you build it.I know everyone has a different opinion but that's why i'm asking.with the right suspention setup do you think he can get into the low 11's with spray?thanks for the help guys the only fuel injected car i've ever worked on and raced is my 99 camaro. so i'm new to the 5.0 crowd but i hope i can learn alot helping with his buildup. and sorry if this is posted in the wrong place
 
I'd say low 11s are possible with suspension assuming the car hooks. You will have to be careful because as many people will tell you, the stock 302 block is weak, and is likely to split if you go much over approx. 450rwhp. It's hard to say what exactly you will need for the bottom end without having torn it down yet. If the crank and rods are in good condition, you could get away with buying new FORGED pistons and probably going .030 over to a 306. If not, you might as well do a 331 or 347 stroker. If you don't plan on running boost, you can run a little more compression, but I'd keep it under 11:1 for a street car. The nitrous will like the compression, but watch for detonation on the spray. Personally, I would probably run AFR 185cc heads, but there are many other offerings from Trick Flow, Edelbrock, etc. that would work fine. It sounds like you have a little bit of money to play with, so I would go with a custom cam to match your combo perfectly. As for the carb/EFI question, it depends on your emissions situation. If you have to pass emissions, it would be wise to keep the EFI, and yes, you will need to convert to maf. If you're not worried about emissions, carb it. A 306 with what I mentioned above will probably be 310-330rwhp, so I wouldn't spray it with more than a 100 shot if you want the block to stay together. I hope this helps. Cool. 331 seems to be a more popular stroker choice as there are stories of 347s burning oil. Many people say they do, many people say they don't. I've never run one, so I couldn't tell you, but if I was building one I'd go with a 331 to be safe. With a stroker you will obviously be making more power than the 306 combo, so be careful with the spray. I don't suggest going much higher than 450rwhp.

A MAF conversion will help the EFI stroker motor run better.
A standard A9L computer and PMAS maf setup should work quite well.
Personally, I am a fan of the 351w swap anytime the 302 comes out. The 351w is a stronger block.
