Got Cam Specs now I have questions! Engine Builders!

So after much deliberation with Crane Cams I finnally know what my cam is and all the specs. Now I have questions about what is possible to do with it?

First off, as some already know I am having the motor completly gone through to find definite answers as to what is in the motor as the lower end was like this when I bought it way back in 1993. The car is most for show and cruises, but I would like to be able to take it to the track once a year and run a decent number. I have ran in the high 12's in it before just to give you a base. It did have a supercharger when I bought it, but something wasn't right about it and I sold that.

I am having the heads gone through as well as the lower end, still keeping it at 30 over, just freshening up.

So do you think this cam is decent and could a power adder be put on in the future and be safe, I am thinking turbo or NOS, but it is in the future. From what I know about the cam it is good for torque, but not huge power. It has always made good power from 1000 to 5000.

The cam is 216 intake and exhaust and lobe seperation is 111. Here is the rest of the specs sheet. Suggestions, comments, should I change to something else.

On last thing I have always liked the exhaust sound so I don't want to do too much to change that.

N/A I would install it in at 104* ( 2* advanced) for the boost or NOS set it ni at the 106 ICL. It should work fine. I always like to build the power on the engine and then spray for an add'l IF I need it ( street races are different than the strip). That being said I would install it at 2*advanced and rock!!

Hey bud, I hate to jump on the bandwagon but you ever thought about spending another $150 bucks to match your combo with a custom cam. That way you know it is 'ideal', but it's up too you, I know how budget's can be:)

Did Keith do the bottomend or someone else?

Chat later...

Hey David! I know I could spend the money and have a custom cam done and the money is really not the question for me at the moment. I was just wondering what people thought about the cam I have now, and how it matched with my combo. The cam looks great no noticable wearing or groove marks. It will depend really on the rockers (Crane Gold Race Rockers $400) as I have two that are grooved a bit, if the machine shop can't clean them up I will replace them, push rods and cam. An as it sits now the bottom end was done back in 1991 by a shop in St. Louis.

I still have never got the bottom end to the machine shop, but it will leave for there tomorrow. Just had alot of set backs in time that I haven't got to it yet. An Keith just wasn't working out for me after many phone calls I didn't feel comfortable with them. Every time I called I talked with someone different and it took forever on hold to get to someone. I am not saying they aren't good, I just think they had more work than they could handle. They told me 12 week minimum for minor stuff.

I am going to Rebel Rebuliders here in Little Rock. I have talked with them several times and talked with some former customers and I think they will do a good job.

I dint know that the FTI cams were 150.00??

Tpr

$150 more than the Crane cam and I never said a FTI cam. I thought the cam was a new one he was going to buy.

Anyways, I have heard of the Rebel Rebuilders shop, I'm sure they will do just fine:) My experience with Keith was a bit different I guess, but oh well, you just do what you can to get it on the road:nice:

call Crane... a lot of time they REBUILD their rockers.. just a thought..

Crane told me that they don't rebuild the rockers anymore. They are a "race" rocker I don't understand why not, seems that would be common practice.

No this is the one that was in the motor since I have had it! I have spent hours on the phone over the last 2 weeks with Crane trying to figure the grind on the cam, as many of the numbers were unreadable. Finnally to got the right specs. It wasn't in the system any more they had to look it up in there books.

It is good to know how much the FTI is though!

FTI is $325 total, which would have been around $125-150 more than the crane cam you have. Upon my first post I thought you were looking at buying the crane cam, not that you already had it:)

yeah and the lift are the same. That is pretty much like a ford cam. By having the valves open at different times you can make hp in different rpm ranges and most of the time make more power all together. That is why i don't understand why people are still running ford cam there are alote better ones out now.

If you can get you hands on it, theres a program called Dyno 2000... while its not perfect, it does do a decent job of estimating cam abilities. Use the iterator and you can use your combo to see what adjusting certain cam properties will do to your power curve. (eg. vary your lobe seperation from 108 - 114 or duration.)

I think that cam may be a little whimpy myself but I like a lot of lope at idle, the kids love it - pointing across intersections as the car lopes =) In the words or Borat, "very nice."

lunati custom cam; 114 lobe sep, 230/238 duration, and .548 lift! Makes incredible torque.
