Please tell me you're not one of those people that calls them "Cadillac converters..." :nonono: (Used to hear that all the time when I worked at Autozone.)

There's a provision is most (if not all) states' laws that say if your cats are either 5+ years old or over so many thousand miles (50k, I think), or if they're shown to be non-functional, it's okay for you to replace them. As far as the exact NUMBER of cats is concerned, I don't think there's any exact legislation regarding that - as long as you have one per exhaust pipe, essentially, I think that's all they want. That is, if you had two downpipes going to a Y-pipe and exiting as one, you'd only need one, which is what a lot of GM vehicles do; if you have two continuous tailpipes going back, such as in a Mustang or Crown Vic (true dual exhaust, in other words), then you'd need at least two.

If you buy an H-pipe or X-pipe with high-flow cats, and as long as you have something with it to show that it is, indeed, 50-state legal (usually if it's CARB certified, you're good to go, because California is the strictest of 'em all), they really can't give you any crap about it, legally.

i understood it perfectly...thanks for such a detailed answer lol..

SO do most of you get it on the h pype or after the headers???? DO they even sell the high flows that are right after the headers?? mine h pipe converter bottoms out on speed bumps and some drive ways i think ill go for the after headerones if the have it...i dont know yet...

prochamber...i love mine.

Never seen any that have the cats directly after the header flanges, other than the OEM H-pipe (which has four cats). Those are a royal pain to install, though, because not only is it a PITA to get to the header flange nuts when having to reach around the cats being up there, but getting the O2 sensors in/out is also a bit of a headache, as well.

all cars run more than one converter our mustangs stock run 4. the two closest to the exhaust manifold are called LOC or light off catalytic most of us know of them has precats. they are a single bed oxidaton converter or a 2way controlling hc and co emissions during cold engine warm up. since they are so close to the exhaust manifolds they rapidly warm up the locs which start the oxidation process reducing the emissions until the main cat the 3way warms to control all the emissions, hc-co and nox. this is why you always have a warm car for your emission test.

most of the time which is why you might have not noticed, cars today and some of the older ones the precats or locs are part of the headers like my svt contour, which sucks, I can get headers but would have to run milelimantors to avoid a check engine light, obdII has o2 sensors that get a single that the precats have warmed up.

If I missed anything someone else can add my head hurts!

all cars run more than one converter

Not entirely true. Depends on the year. Most OBD-II cars probably run two or more on all cars, but pre-OBD-II cars didn't. Dual cats weren't available even as an option on GM's V-8 F-Body cars until, IIRC, 1989 or so, which added an extra 10 horses from being less restrictive (as opposed to their prior design that had them cramming two 2.5" pipes' worth of exhaust through a single 2.5" cat after a Y-pipe connection) - they still combined the two into a Y-pipe and single main intermediate pipe AFTER the cat, but there was only one cat ... pretty lame design for a "performance" vehicle. :notnice:

Also, a lot of Fords of the pre-OBD-II (pre-'96, mostly, or pre-'94 in a few cases) era had only one cat. Chances are, if it has a Y-pipe exhaust connection (V-6 or V-8 cars), it usually had a single cat ... excluding Fox, Panther, and MN12 platform vehicles.

Later MN12 models had THREE cats - two standard cats, then a single cat that also served as a Y-connection. Weirdness.

I think I even remember seeing a stock H-pipe from a late-model 4.6 (either a Crown Vic or a Mustang) that has SIX catalytic converters on it.

Anyways ... all that aside, most new high-flow cat H- and X-pipes available through the aftermarket only use two cats, and they're more compact than the stock logs. Makes for a lot fewer headaches with fitment and installs ... except in the case of UPR's, because their welders are friggin' idiots that put the cats an inch too far back... :nonono:

Its never smart to speak of things or people you know nothing about. Also if you get images of a done up young teen aged male when you see the name "IrvGotti" , Then maybe you should be talking to a professional about your problem. :Zip2:

By the way you should take your own advice.

hey do what you want man, just letting you know. Its kinda like when you have a booger hanging out your nose and your friend says "hey man , bat in the cave" so you dont go around looking like a fuctard. :nice:
