High power 260/289's

You aren't going to get much from a 260 because the small bore shrouds the valves.

The 289, on the other hand, was capable of some high revs even before today's aftermarket heads. The Ford GT40s could hit 200 mph and those motors were pretty mild in comparison to what you'd get with a solid cam + 185cc AFR recipe that 57fairlane is following. Your sig says you've already got a loose torque converter, but you should also run some 3.90's or lower if you build for high hp with something as small as a 289.

:D You might want to rethink that statement. The Mod motors have the same small bores, actually smaller than the 260's. The 260's bores were 3.8" vs the mods with 3.55" No reason a 260 couldn't put out. Shelby did the first Cobra's with em. The Sunbeam Tigers had em too. :nice:

Ah, but grasshopper, they are two completely different motors, For max flow they used 4V, and over head cams. And still yet, are not know for there low end grunt.

1320 had a screamin' 289 that ran 10's N/A back in the day. maybe he'll chime in.

Dont know what constitutes a screamer, but my 289 sounds pretty wicked at 6600. Running hooker comps with 2.5" dumped magnaflows, with the edelbrock rpm package. I wish it had more low end though, but my 4.11s helped out quite a bit. Its especially cool at night when i bounce off the limiter at 6500 and it throws flames.

What vehicle are you putting it in? What kind of gears? Street car, or full out race car? How much do you want to spend? You can retrofit a roller cam, get .600ish lift, and still idle. Steeper gears, taller tires, weight, and what kind of transmission will all play into it.
What are you planning on doing?

Are you directing this to me? I was just wanting to feel some love for the small motors!!:nice:

Even the 2 valve motors have the benefit of hemispherical combustion chambers. No shrouding when the valve moves towards the center of the bore.

I don't know what 2 valve Mod heads you've been looking at, but all the ones I've seen have in-line valves, same as the Windsors. The only difference in the 2 valve mod vs a Windsor is the overhead cam design, and the square (4.6) and over square bore/stroke (5.4) Again, talking 2 valve 4.6 vs a 260 Windsor, there's no reason the 260 can't achieve the same output as a Mod.

I've got a 289 in my '70 fastback. It's been bored 0.30, 10.5:1 pistons, 512 292 cam, ported polished & decked 351w heads w/ roller rockers, etc...

Right now I'm running a 4spd toploader w/ 3.50s (used to have 4.11s) so it has no top end but gets there plenty quick.

I'm guessing it's putting out about 350hp at the flywheel. It's no BB but she definitely screams. Most people are shocked when they see it's only a 289.:nice:

I still have the little 289 in my fastback. its one nasty sounding and hard revving 289, just recently, it scared the open header judges at route66 rendvous, they thought the rods were gonna come out after repeated revs 6-8k for a few minutes strait and then I just held it a 8k for about 10 seconds. I didnt win but scored a 121db from 50 feet. my buddy revved the nasty 289 in his falcon well past 9k a few times to try and out do my car.

the last number it put down was just over 300 at 6000, that was through the 3500 stall converter, and my dyno guy was scared to rev it past 6000. the engine really starts to pull right around 5500-5800 and pulls hard to 7800.. it did put down 371 rwhp with a differnt cam and throught the toploader, 470rwhp on a 125 shot of juice..

fastback and falcon built 289 un corked
