I have a turbo coupe rear end out of a 88 thunderbird turbo coupe. The drivers side rubber boot around the piston is worn out. Should I try to replace the boot? I really don't want to buy a $100 caliper. Any suggestions?
With a piston removal tool. If these are the same as the SVO Mustang calipers, and I think they are, I spent about $8.50 building an incredibly half-assed version of the factory tool. Granted it just barely works, but I haven't had a problem with it.
I got two long bolts that fit in the 2 holes in the face of the piston and welded them to a piece of steel, then I drilled a hole in the middle and welded in an el-cheapo 1/4" to 3/8" adapter. Take a 3/8" extension and rachet, plug it on to that, and volia! It's wobbly and can't take a ton of force but it's done the trick for me (and my calipers were really gnarly, so it should work for most people)
Yep...I ended up soaking my calipers in brake fluid. Ate the rubber all to hell but they're going to come apart in no time and they needed a rebuild anyway.
Well I couldnt get them to screw out so I just pumped the brake pedal a few times till it was very much so extended, and wiggled the rest of it out by hand. I have a tool to put it back in though
